Sentinel's Fate, first impressions.Follow

So, it's been a bit over a week, I've already seen several lvl 90 players. Unfortunately I had to work a lot recently so I haven't seen all that much of the new zones so far. I'm still in Paineel, questing at the Eye of Dartain at the moment.

Still, the effects of some changes were easily noticed. The stances are altered radically, the AA's have been changed and expanded again, which led to the fun job of rechoosing them, again lol.

I was partly in shock when I noticed that the former first line of AA's in the fighter tree were simply cut, no more str, sta, agi, wis or int boosts anymore, yet I don't see all that much of a difference in my stats. Ofcourse, I didn't write them down before the change so I don't really know for sure how much they changed, but not all that much. The new AA's added seem to be pretty good, useful, unlike some of the shadow expansion. (as always personal opinion ofcourse)

Fighting in the new zones is easy, the first day I explored a bit and fell down the waterfall in the roekilik caverns (or whatever the rats are called), I found lvl 83 arrow downs and 84 no arrows there but all went down very easily, and I mean easy. Granted, I do have my mythical and T1 shard armour, but that's not that great to be able to even take down a mob that is five levels higher I encountered in the caverns too, with hardly using power and almost no loss in health. (with the use of my monk abilities, chi and tsunami and the improved stone stance ability, but still)

Ofcourse, I do prefer this than not being able to beat a single mob on my own, as SOE did at the beginning of the game in the higher lvl zones.

I don't really like the quests so far. The second quest I got was to kill 3 rats, at lvl 80 that does sound a bit ridiculous, to say the least. Too many quests involve merely running around, talking to someone or delivering a message. Again, at that lvl it just doesn't feel right anymore. I have only done 51 quests there though, plenty left to do! It's all very lineair so far, but that's pretty normal, the quests make you explore the city first, then the areas just around it next.

The visuals aren't bad, but so far it's all very brownish, I'm going to fly around a bit when the servers are up again and see how the rest looks like.

Very little lag, I almost quit the game with the previous expansion as it was truly unplayable then, but up till now it has all been very smooth.

I've yet to encounter all the changes to the game or see all the content of this expansion, but so far it's not bad. Not as fun as Faydwer or Kylong Plains was at first, but it's early.

What are your first impressions of this new expansion?

Once you get out of Dartain and further into Toxx Forest, you will see a big change in color. A lot more lush, lavish greens and plant life (think of Kunzar Jungle).

You don't specifically say what class of fighter you are, so this may not help. Under your sub-class tree, the first AA you spend to open up the rest of the 5 tree's..does have 2 of your main stats tied in with it (probably an extra 4 Sta/Str for each point you spend in it), that's how my SK is. My necro has the option of 4 Sta/Int for each point spent in that first bubble, so you may want to take a new look at that.

Being at the 200 AA cap meant that I got to start spending new AA's as soon as I was earning them, and while there are some really nice choices, personally I would say the TSO line brought out a lot more options that I personally liked.

I will agree that the mobs seemed a bit easy. Like you though, I do have my mythical, and a mix of T2 and some raid gear. The expansion was not intended to be a challenge for us, but more for the casual player who has hit 80 and wishing to go further on. The ability to gain faction and then buy legendary gear from merchants proves this.

I love linear quests personally. I like to stay in one area as long as possible before being sent out to a new spot, this assures that I have less backtracking to do.

My only complaint is I would like to see more quests. Being mostly a solo player, I tend to do things at a slow pace so that I can enjoy the environment. I've already completed every solo quest available to me (not counting daily faction, tradeskills, or quests that may not be available because I am only 86).

That's not saying there aren't a ton of quests. Having just started venturing into The Hole, I am overwhelmed with the amount of quests (most repeatable). Plus we still have hope for the zone that the Airship will take us to, which isn't open yet (though there is a quest for it you can get).

I guess SoE could have added more side camps, and smaller quest lines hidden throughout the zones. I imagine they didn't think that people would exhaust them all within a week (which is silly of them). Perhaps they already have plans to add more to it.

I can't really compare it to other expansions, as Kunark was already out when I started seriously playing (had done trial accounts for years). So to me I can only compare it to TSO, which was a HUGE expansion with all the content they added. Not even including the shard zones, the Moor's itself was just such an expansive zone that I can understand why they didn't do that again.

My favorite bit about this expansion is I can solo it - and I don't even have to wait until the mobs are green. I'm an "average" player, no raid or shard gear, although I've got some nice pieces. The last two expansions were so difficult to solo with my Troub that I didn't bother hitting 80 until right before Sentinel's Fate.

I'm taking my time. I play an hour or two every night, tradeskill one day, adventure the next.

I the expansion "actually" available now or is it still on the pre-order only preview? I'll probably come back as soon as it's open to everyone but I missed the whole pre-order thing so I have to wait...

Wow... I just noticed this is my 2999th post... quick, someone give me something to say so I can break 3K!!!

Yes OBD, the DD was available for purchase on the 23rd. I have a guildy in the UK and he had to wait to get it as well, but he's up and running around the new zone with us. So definitely get the xpac and start joining in the chaos!

You want something to say?

Why did you quit playing EQ2 in the first place you bum!?

Thanks for the opening Dya... this then will be post #3000 !!!!!!!

Technically I never did "quit" playing EQ2... my subscription has been up & running for most of the time since launch. I've let it lapse for a few months here and there but for the most part I have payed even when I wasn't playing. I've also kept patched up for most of that time. and finally, I've purchased & installed every X-pac in order to keep the account up to date. I haven't played regularly for a few reasons.

First of all, my job and work schedule have been all over the map for the last three years and that has kept me out of gaming in general. (I rarely logged in to LOTRO either)

Beyond that, I had some guild troubles that soured me on the whole EQ2 experience but that is all in the past now and with a change in my schedule at work I am hoping to have more free time in which to game online.

Gratz OBD! And I hope you get to play fulltime again soon!

I'll have to recheck those AA's then, I most likely missed something.

I'm pretty much a solo player too, I have been since the beginning really. Still, I should have had a full T2 armour set, but due to laziness and a very extreme dislike of that daily solo quest, I'm stuck on T1 with only one T2 piece. I didn't realise the armour was there to be bought at first though, my mistake.

I was afraid of this, I heard some numbers from other players of quests they did in the areas and they didn't really sound that high.

I'm putting 50% of my exp in AA's as I'm still not even at 200 (again, laziness, I've been 80 since forever lol), so I'm thinking that I'll have to grind my way through those final levels. Ofcourse, with the new quests at lower lvl zones, mentoring down and doing those can help.

True, although I got a lot of legendary and even some fabled items from solo questing my way to 80 and doing some long quest lines in the Kylong Plains expansion zone. It's something SOE has done quite well imo, there's great gear to be had even without raiding. (ofcourse, the raid gear is the best naturally, but the soloing gear can be pretty good too) It can involve lengthy questlines though, but can't have good stuff for free.

Just so you know, I do live at home and have no job...so I can easily play 10+ hours everyday (in fact I generally do). I'm sure a much more laid back player will take some time to get through the same content.

I'm level 80, but mainly solo ... and have never earned a single shard yet. Yes, I'm running around in mainly M/C stuff, but like Calthine, I can actually solo in the new expansion. It's looks pretty good so far, but after a little adventuring I got out my armourer and did all of the crafting quests, so haven't ventured that far yet.

I found Paineel to be quite laggy. Whether that was due to the numbers of players in zone at the time I don't know - there have been four instances to choose from most of the times I've played.

Adventure time coming up...
