I just got an SOE email minutes ago with a link to THIS information.

Quote:
Engage in the most exciting and intense PvP battles with your friends, regardless of server! Available for players with max-level characters, Battlegrounds provide thrilling group-based, competitive matches in three all-new zones. Quickly join the nonstop action including three different types of matches with up to 48 players total. There is a role for all, no matter the class, each player can support or lead the group to victory and reap the rewards of the all-new Chaos armor sets! - Scheduled for release on or around February 16, 2010.

It basically sounds like Raid vs Raid arenas. Now personally I'm not one for pvp aspects..I dont even engage in Arena play (though I do collect the pets). I really can't say that this is something I look forward to..specifcally the new Chaos Armor that it mentions. Will this be armor that only is used in these special arenas, or will it be something that people can use outside of them? I sort of hope that its only for these special arenas because I would hate to be singled out of normal groups because I dont have the "new" gear...especially with the new gear that we will be getting in the new expansion.

Really though it's too soon to tell...and I'm sorry Calthine, I'm sure this is something you wanted to post a story about. I still want to hear your thoughts (or maybe some inside info) you may have.

Strange, because I was thinking that the images at the bottom of this page on EQ Traders was linked to the mysterious art shards, but now maybe not. The EQ Traders fragment seems to say "BATTL" in the corner of one image and definately 'Smugglers Den' on the other - which links in with your SOE link.

One of the ZAM images definately says "Relic Control" - which doesn't seem to relate to battlegrounds despite the similar styles of all the images.

Yeah I forgot to put that in, but I usually don't make posts that late at night and my brain was already zoning out.

Ugh, I hope they don't start trying to balance the classes for PVP.

This is a bad idea, a really bad idea.

Any type of serious PvP is going to split the player base, it always does. Once the PvP aspect has a solid following, the PvPers are going to start demanding balance. Attempting to balance that many classes that have been established for this long is going to end badly.

I get the appeal to PvP, I played on a PvP server back in WoW. I get the idea behind following in WoWs successes.

What I don't get is how SOE can see this as a good move. Even Blizzard has stated that the Arena, Blizzards all mighty e-sport, was a mistake. The level of class balance required to keep on top of the Battlegrounds and the Arena has had a serious impact on the PvE aspect and players, and not a good one.

]As for the biggest mistake? There's a lot of them that I think, were ... they just "fell out" of things. One example: I wish the servers were more stable when we launched, of course - there's a lot of that sort of thing. We have a lot of excuses for that - we didn't expect nearly the response - but we can't say it wasn't a mistake. If I was going to pick on a game design thing that I look back on and think was a mistake? We really never designed WoW to be a competitive e-sports game; it was something that we decided to start tackling because there was such a desire and demand to evolve it in that direction, to introduce competitive arenas. I'm not sure that that was the right thing to do with the game.

We didn't engineer the game and classes and balance around it, we just added it on, so it continues to be very difficult to balance. Is WoW a PvE cooperative game, or a competitive PvP game? There's constant pressure on the class balance team, there's pressure on the game itself, and a lot of times players who don't PvP don't understand why their classes are changing. I don't think we ever foresaw how much tuning and tweaking we'd have to do to balance it in that direction. Either I'd go back in time to before WoW ever shipped and change the rules to make the basic game more conductive for being an e-sport, or if not that, just say it doesn't make sense. Right now, WoW has a bit of a schizophrenic philosophy behind it, and we're trying to figure out how to guide it.

It's tricky, now that we've gone down that road, because we have a passionate, large audience that enjoys it - the Arena, the e-sport - so we can't just chop off that head. We can't just say, "We fouled up and will go back to how it used to be before," because we have a really passionate audience that wants it in the game.

I could have told them that, and the devs who played EQ should have known that. EQ's PVP was a clusterduck from the beginning, tacked on and badly managed, because it was never intended to be a PVP game.

Maybe the battlegrounds will be kind of like the arenas and they'll quietly fade away...

In any case, I won't start PVP'ing, and I'll continue to play the game until it looks like they're going WoW's direction and trying to balance for PVP, like Sam said. Unless they're somehow able to keep PVE just as good.
