I have diel up and I wanted to start playing EQ2 again, but I doubt I will since it will take over 70 hours to download this patch. Anyone know how to make this process faster?

Since you are just installing, you get to download all the patches since launch. Bad news is, you get to install ALL the patches.

Folks that have been playing have had many more but smaller downloads. Unfortunately, the patches don't come on disk and are only available via download.

You can select to turn off some of the added content to download, specifically the voice add-ons that were made available a few months ago. On your login screen, select (I think) download options, and deselect (I think) extra content. That should cut off some of the extra optional voice-over downloads and may trim a bit of fat.

If you can, get cable. I understand it may not be so easy for you, but believe me, it is well worth it.

It probably won't be 70 hours. Even if the clock says that at the beginning, it will adjust itself downward as the download progresses.

Still, however much shorter it ends up being, it is still going to tie up your phone line for a LONG time.

You really should consider upgrading to either DSL or cable modem. The competition among broadband providers has gotten pretty fierce, to the point where you should now be able to get broadband service for less than the cost of dail-up.

I have seen DSL deals in my area for $14.95 per month. It doesn't get much better than that!

I hate dial up and I hate DSL in my area. I would rather pay $45 a month and have sturdy connection than pay $19.95 and get kicked off every 20 minutes.

Stupid Verizon!!! Smiley: motz

Unfortunatly, that is the problem with dialup it takes forever to down load. The best thing to do is run it over night, or when you go to work.

For high speed, I have done both cable and dsl, the dsl here is SW bell and sucks. The service was constantly interupted. It was a pain to surf the net, let alone play a game on it. Cable has been great though.

For everyone here, I would sugest cable over anything. I work for a cable company that offers internet through the cable line. (that's my job is to install services and troubleshoot them) and by far cable internet is faster and more steady. you pay one set price and 99% of the time your download speed is at least around 3,000KBs or 3MBs. Like with my services i average around 8MBs sometimes lower. And of course I get mine for free with 512KBs upload.. *snicker* Anyways. go with Cable if you can. Most places have more then one provider so you should be able to find a good price, if you live in the South Dakota/North Dakota area. give me a holler.. :)

Only 2 problems with cable internet...

first you have to do business with a cable company and ALL cable companys suck!

and second, your speed is based on how many other people in your area are hooked up to cable - there is one spigot and everyone has to get their water out of the same hose... If you live in an area with lots of subscribers, you get whatever is left...

At least with DSL your speed is consistant.

not ALL cable companys suck. And when you say that with cable internet you have to do business with them, you just strickly speaking business or to have cable tv as well to get internet cuz that's not true. You can have just the internet, I know with alot of DSL companys that you have to have their phone services before you can get their DSL services.. But everyone has their own opinion. :p

Oh, and if you dont live right there at the headend for DSL you're not going to get the greatest of speed, the farther away you are, the slower it gets. Then they charge more for the people that live out in the boonies to get a 1.5 connections.. Well that's from what i've noticed anyways. :P

I have had my DSL through SBC (phone service) I have also have my local & long distance phone service with them Because I have all three I get the special rate of $19 a month for my DSL. I have never had a problem in the three years with them. I have spoken to people who couldn't say the same thing though.

I think the best thing to do is to talk to people who live in your area to see what they have to say about the different services.
