custom UIFollow

#1 Aug 26 2005 at 3:36 PM Rating: Excellent
So, I finally picked a custom UI. I went with Thor which is a complete package including an installer and I am quite happy with it.

Features include an enhanced crafting window and a really nice XP window that shows all 3 XP levels at once, (adv, TS and guild), including a decimal readout so you know exactly what percentage of the level you are at. (56.8% for example) Player status is also more detailed with a numerical readout of your current and max health & power visable at all times.

Lots of other nice perks like mini hotbars and smaller bags that are 6 slots across instead of 4. You also get an improved bank window and many other goodies like an advanced start button area with mouse click options like map, knowledge book, showhood, etc.

Install was clean and painless and the package includes UISwitcher which is an application to let you change UI's on the fly.

You can look at it or download it HERE

Just a word of warning to anyone not used to working with custom UI's. In EQ1, with each new patch there was a chance that custom UI's got stuffed up so you need to be prepared to troubleshoot it as you go along.

I have a slight tendancy to freak out when things go wrong with my favourite game so always stick with the safe and boring original UI

Things have changed a lot since EQ1. In this game, the code and even a nice tool set for UI developers is available from SOE. The concept of third party UI is not only supported but endorsed by Sony.

In fact, the latest version of the UI I just got is already updated with the latest feature set slated to go live with the combat upgrade / LU13. The new features aren't active yet but they're in place and waiting.

I went to check out the Thor UI, clicked through a few screens of setup instructions. Got panicy when I saw more than 4 steps to install, and when I saw a mention of ".ini" I clutched my heart and fell off my chair.

Much safer just to pound Sootfoot Harvesters in Lavastrom ad infinitum.

Ummm... I think the setup instructions you were looking at were the generic ones that are common to the whole site. All I had to do was download the zip file, unzip it and double click the .exe file.

The built in installer came up and after choosing the elements I wanted to install from a check box list, The installer did all the grunt work.

Piece of cake... but maybe that's just me...

There you go, stealing all my drama. :)

That makes it sound much easier. And since I'm dumber than a bag of hammers, it should work, even for me.

Wow! If it includes and exe (executble file) then things really have changed since EQ Live. I will have to check this out tonight.

I have to add my 2 cents...I am a completely computer dense person and even I was able to install this UI.

I had the sweaty palms and everything myself having done a custom UI in EQI and having to take all of the manual steps involved (.ini file for example) and was VERY pleasantly surprised to find that this did it all for me. Took all of 2 min. to do.

No more sweaty palms and really nifty UI to boot.

However, being as paranoid as I am, I went with all of the defaults instead of picking and choosing in the list when it came up, but I suggest highly doing so so that you don't miss out on any good options. I must note, however, that I am completely satisfied with all of the default options, so feel free to go that route as well Smiley: grin

Ok, I'm on the Thor bandwagon also. I did go through the check blocks at setup and changed only a few, not really knowing what the impact of either would be.

I was surprised that all my buttons are now the size of a thumbtack, but I have a lot more viewing space.

I don't really like the format of the concentration bubbles that are now little slivers. Not sure how I can manage those except for right-click-cancel the icon on the side.

My favorite function is the way the improved inventory box comes up when I'm at the mail box. Just wish it would default close when I close the mailbox.

Overall, good UI for my first ever UI.

Add me to the bandwagon. The thing I like most is the size of my bags and boxes. I can finally have everything open at once and still see around a little. Oh, another thing I really like is the toggle bag in my inventory. You just click on the bag and all my bags open or close. I wish there were a toggle bag on the bank side though.

I haven't gotten to play with it much but from what I see I like. And I agree with everyone on the simplicity of installing this. I fretted over the directions and thought I hadn't installed the UI. When I started up my EQ II there was a new interface.

Have to say, put this on last night and Im really pleased with it. Installed itself in 3 seconds flat and it rocks!! Sooo much more room on my screen now and it really simplifies alot of the tedious clicking through bags and inventory items.

Good call OBD

I would like to recommend the map program availble from the same site.

* Maps to all zones. Not just overland and city zones.

* A whole bunch of waypoints for various quest updates and mobs.

* Color coded dots for party members. (Actually, I'm not sure it that came with the map program or if it came bundled with Thor.)

Link here, btw.

You may need to register and log in to see that page. You will also need to download the .net framwork from microsoft in order to use the auto update version (recomended).

For all who followed me to Thor... with LU #13 there is a slight wrinkle... Some of the in-game UI fonts have been updated and no longer show up in the custom UI. You will now be missing numbers and name tags in several critical spots (like XP and targeting windows).

To fix it, you'll need to go back to EQ2interface and pull down the "hot fix" patch that theb Thor dev has available there.

It is a tiny package and comes with it's own auto installer. just kick the .exe file & follow the prompts and you should be good to go. I did it earlier tonight and it went smooth as silk.

i didnt care for how they set it up in the pictures they got. Hopefully all that can be changed. The only thing i like is the player health meters on the top and the bottom right hand corner... the time feature ;p

Other wise it seems very bloated.

I will give it a try when the auto update version comes out.

For now i am very happy with the eq2 map mod. Gives you maps for all zones. very very nice! :D

Ran into a problem after installing the DoF patch for the Thor UI.

My knowledge book is now a large white square with no control buttons. I can't even turn a page or sort them. I can see only the first page of spell icons. :(

I didn't mess with it much last night as I was busy learning my new combat tactics. I'll do more investigation tonight.

Sorry that you're having a problem. I haven't seen or heard of that issue but if you haven't already done so, you might also report it on the Thor thread at EQ2Interface. The developer of the UI seems to be very responsive to both issues and upgrade suggestions and will probably have an answer for you real quick.

Read through the Thor thread and there's others with the same problem. Looks like the solution is to uninstall/install the UI to fix it.
