Just remembered how in FFXI most thieves and ninjas would wear Leaping Boots from level 7 to level 70.

I stopped my bard at ilvl 193 because I would be losing too much crit hit if I got any more eso pieces. Now I'll be able to upgrade those eso pieces I did get to 210, so maybe I'll hit ilvl 200 eventually.

Never managed to get Leaping/Bounding Boots

My favorite was the Republic Subligar. BiS for most melee DDs from level 25 to like 70. It wasn't even like "I prefer the iron underwear," it was "there's nothing better than this."

Surely there's something in between. WoW manages to put 4-5 gear options for every armor class at every item level... maybe if SE started treating FFXIV like a big boy MMO, we too could have real itemization.

No. Giving up Critical for Skill Speed is not a win.

I seriously hope my lack of skill speed on brd isnt the reason my DPS isnt increasing despite the fact Im wearing better/higher IL hear than the last tie I checked my DPS on a dummy

FFXI is without a doubt the best game at keeping gear relevant forever though xD "Enhances xxx ability" was an inventory killer, don't think I've seen that kind of stuff in any other game (and mid battle gearchange ofc)

ps. sorry for nostalgic derail

In all reality - Primary stats (Dex/str etc) weighs the most after the adjustments SE made for 3.0. So while secondary and tetirary stats still matter, it wouldn't hugely impact you compared to ilvl.

Going from say, 47 dex to 56 dex with even higher jump in weapon damage (+3-+7) would increase the damage far more than losing 30 crit for 40 skill speed (since they affect your DoTs anyway.) But SE does have a weird itemization with this game, kind of like they expect you to do every set of content to get the right pieces...but also make some pieces unattractive in the content where having high ilvl gear would actually matter.

As for XI, it's true, some pieces lasted forever mainly because by time NA players got into the game leveled, there wasn't many item sets yet. AF was fine to wear full time back then due to that being your next upgrade, then more gear came out and so on so forth. XIV's main problem is they're too scared of introducing gear that "enhances" you beyond base attributes. Even WoW does it, which they were heavily....influenced by.

3.2 will make matters worse when you can meld materia onto raid gear but heavily restricted in what you can do. So really, ilvl jumps are the main progression of this game's itemization. Sure as a tank you'd never swap in skill speed and/or parry for det/crit, but you also can't rock Savage alexander just barely riding the ilvl entry.
