Just to chime in, 1.0's characters were not a direct copy and paste. They underwent a thorough database conversion like everything else. Your path companion was lost. Your retainers were lost. All your stuff was lost and the Calamity Salvager had it. You began in starter gear. Your soul stones were lost; you had to re-learn how to be a black mage or a paladin.
1.0 characters were transformed, just like the game client, game engine, and game server design. Some parts of 1.0 characters were completely lost - all your in-game achievements were blown away and SE has hemmed and hawed about returning them, because I suspect they lost the data. Some titles were saved, and your character's basic appearance, but that's about it.

While true, my male hyur alt from 1.0 can't actually be recreated in 2.0's engine - Yoshida stated the data values still exist (in order for the conversion to even happen) but you can't select them, just like my, as they called it in 1.0, Charcoal kitty still existed through beta until launch. Even though I shouldn't, but the developer in me makes me curious so I looked into some of the data and it's not that they were lost, they simply have them masked out for whatever reason. This is why you have to contact GM/SE support to get them restored because they don't want to spend time unmasking it.
While there are lore reasons to some, a lot of it was simply because he didn't want to give 1.x players too large of an advantage and force us to see the new quest/job storyline. For example, me being a DRG that already dealt with mr. notcain and his pet drake at the time as well as taking out Ifrit (whom originally was more of a living thing than 2.x seem to really showcase) and so on..was all suddenly lost due to plot convienence amnesia on who you are. Even the new storyline kinda had that going kinda. Same with our path companions. while a lot of them died, they were tossed aside for the largely useless chocobo companion (no offense to any who likes it..but..) I mean comparing XI's trust magic and the NPCs in XIV...Trusts are far superior and yoshi should look at it. Maybe not make it an alter ego, but the mechanics has a lot more promise since they gave the bosses the gambit system chocos were supposed to have.
