You won't make too much money til you hit 50 if for no other reason than the real profit in XIV crafting comes from HQ items.
Just like to point out that the Challenge Log (Lv39 IIRC?) needs to be unlocked ASAP.
A
surprising amount of money can be made just by trying to meet as many challenges as possible.
When you first unlock the 'log, a lot of them will not be doable because they are not unlocked yet. However, even just the Basic Ones + the 10 Challenges in one Week done can easily net you 10-20k per week for free just by doing what you'd be doing already anyways.
My character on Faerie has 950,000g and I've sold very little on the AH (two Tier IV Materias you get out of the main Questline for ~160k each). The rest was made from doing stuff that one does while playing FFXIV, 'cept for a few 5-7k sales here-and-there, and two 100-crystal farming runs I made early game trying to level up MIN and BTN a few levels to give myself some starting cash.
So that's 600,000g just from doing the Main Quest, all the quests in Coerthas, and a few other quests here-and-there, along with daily dungeon/guildhest and the challenge log, and vendoring Allagan Coins from quests whenever I could.
Not too shabby for hardly selling anything whatsoever.
Then when you get up to 50, you can unlock the hunts, you can add another 4-5k a day just by hunting (that's another 30-40k per week), running the dungeons at 50 gives you 4k a pop, running Main Story Scenario gives about that, etc etc etc.
Unless you're going for Star Crafting, or big time melds or somecrap, I find that one doesn't really need all that much money to function in XIV. I recently splurged 70k (I had 1,100,000!) on new clothes for my crafting/gathering classes because I didn't feel like going through the hours of collecting junk trying to HQ a set, so I just bought the pieces at 10k a pop instead.
Otherwise, I spend almost nothing on the Market.
