New Job in First expansionFollow

#27KojiroSoma, Posted: Jun 30 2014 at 1:31 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) That we're getting any kind of tank is nothing but conjecture and speculation on the playerbase it's part. Nothing has been said towards this by the developers, their staff or anyone affiliated with Square Enix.

There are people who like tanking, there are people who like healing and there are people who like playing DPS.

If 10% of the players play Paladin, 10% plays Warrior, 10% plays White Mage, 10% plays Scholar and the remaining 60% are divided between DPS, adding more tanks wont make the pool of tanks any bigger.

Pretty much. It's not that there's a lack of tank jobs. It's that people don't want to tank in the first place. Adding a third tank job won't suddenly make 50% more people want to play a tank.

That being said, I'd be surprised if there isn't a new tank coming in the expansion, but it probably won't reduce queue times that much. (Not ofter the first few weeks when everyone's had a chance to try it out.)

Actually it came out either at or around E3. There was mention of tank and healer but that we'd have to wait for the expansion.
This is a really helpful thread pulling together a lot of the press stuff and all the hints etc we've had

I can see various things working in this game. DNC could come off PUG and be a tank or a healer if it were in any way like the roles in FFXI. Which of course may not be the case.

I hope they do something really interesting and different with the Healer role. I'd like a different approach.

Sort of. I agree that the number of new tanks in response to a new tank job is unlikely to be that earth-shatteringly big. But if a new tank job comes with a new gameplay style for tanking, it absolutely WILL attract people to it who previously didn't enjoy tanking.

I'll give you a couple of examples:
-- FFXI NIN: I enjoyed tanking on this job, but not on PLD or WAR (back in the pre-abyssea era). So NIN made be want to tank for parties, whereas PLD and WAR made me want to change jobs. Gameplay difference.

-- WoW: I've enjoyed tanking as a warrior and as a druid, somewhat tolerated it as a monk, didn't really like doing it as a paladin or death knight. Gameplay differences between the classes affect that feeling and they absolutely matter.

While that may be true, adding healing and DPS jobs doesn't give players who like playing tank jobs something else to level. Look at it this way. If you like playing DPS jobs, you have 5 jobs you can level. If you like playing healer or tank, you run out after only two. Tanks are already more likely to cap out one job to 50 than DPS players since they have shorter dungeon queue times. So the problem is even worse for a player who is leveling their 3rd (or more) DPS job.

While the low level roulette gives some incentive for tanks that have finished leveling to queue up and help those who are in the leveling phase of their jobs, I have my doubts that it's enough. There are so many different roulettes as it is. How much of the player base wants to run expert, high level and low level roulettes faithfully every day, all before being able to do any other content?

If a new tank job was added at the same time as new healer and DPS jobs, then the players who enjoy playing tank classes would have a job to level. And then the player base wouldn't be reliant on the subset of level 50 tanks who are willing to run low level roulette.
