Hello, I have played FFXI for the past 8 years before enough was enough (Seekers of Adoulin) so after 6 months away from FFXI I am missing MMO's but just cannot take FFXI's direction sadly.

Anyway, as a complete noob to XIV I was wondering if there is a guide that outlines the differences between the two games, like for example in FFXI DEX would help with accuracy and crit rate but after reading a few posts here it seems that FFXIV might be different?

Thank you for any help and sorry if you get this kind of thing a lot.

Rabid.

http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/FF14_Wiki and http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/ are the 2 sites I used when I had questions about the game. Also you may want to avoid the Official FFXIV Forums as it seems to be the Mos Eisley of any MMO Forums. Further questions can be asked here (Our Frequent Posters are pretty helpful) or on MMO-Champion.Com

Good luck and welcome to FFXIV!

Try this for a start from Mr. Happy:

Please don't be afraid to ask questions.

XIV reduces a lot of the guess work. Just mouse over anything on the character menu and it tells in detail you what it does. DEX is all about physical ranged damage with minor boosts to block rate and parry, for example, whereas VIT translates directly into increased HP. CRIT is considered its own offensive stat.

You cannot change gear mid-battle in XIV, so it becomes less about min-max like it was in XI and more about Best In Slot. With the iLvl system, it's fairly easy to guage how much better one piece is against another (iLvl 100 will always beat iLvl 80.)

Thank you for the fast replies, just watched the video and it helped a lot, sure seems like a lot different game than 11.

I had a good look through the jobs but couldn't really see one that used to suit my play style, I was mainly a DNC or a THF, basically I liked stabbing things with the ability to either self heal or high evade.

I didn't really understand the NM's situation in the video, I did used to hate camping 21-24hr pops, but also liked to farm the odd 2hr pop just for fun... not sure if that type of thing still exists, or even if there is much room to 'solo' as much as you want?

There's no equivalent for THF or DNC yet in FFXIV. Monk and Dragoon have fun positional gameplay, but neither of them are particularly good at self-healing.

There aren't NMs in the sense of FFXI lottery spawns or rare spawns. Named mobs do show up out in the world in the form of FATE bosses.

We are getting some kind of dagger class as one of the next things that are added (along with a mysterious gun class) but we don't have any details on them yet other than guesswork based on cutscenes from the last infusion of storyline. It's quite likely that it'll be a THF-like class that branches into NIN for the job, but we just don't know yet.

I used to be endgame DNC too (I even once solo healed a Valkurm Voidwatch on DNC), but what I did with XIV was drop back to how I started out in 2004 on XI: WHM and then later MNK. WHM is a lot more active and less annoying (good riddance, Haste cycle!) than XI, and with offensive spells and switching stances it kind of has the pace of the XI DNC play style. I am enjoying the heck out of XIV's WHM. (Actually, I am really enjoying MNK and BLM too, but WHM has more of the DNC pacing and feel. Oh, and Fishing and crafting is great fun in XIV too.)

Come over to Lamia and join Catwho, Valk Ayree, and myself in The Swarm. Lots of FFXI refugees in our Free Company, more always welcome. We can help you relate to the Eorzea/Vana'diel differences.

Seconding the invitation! We are small but close knit. The best kind of FC :) And we have the most awesome small house on the server, thanks to Valk's obsessive interior decorating.

I am really, really, really enjoying BLM. It can be pure offense or almost a support role depending on the circumstances of the fight, with some quick tactical decisions required for maximum efficiency on the fly.
