Because my friends in XI mostly quit and went to this game. It's tough for me because I like XI as a game more, but without your friends around, it loses its magic :<

I have to go with the previous comments; my better-half got me into ff11 and we played together for 6 years, so naturally we moved to this when it came out, been here ever since.

1. Comparatively cheaper form of entertainment my previous experience of buying a game, beating it in two weeks and then buying another.
2. Its like FFXI minus everything I hated.
3. I am a pack rat and love to collect things, but in real life my space is limited so I digitally hoard to manage my compulsion. This game provides me with that ability. I would buy 10 retainers if I could.
4. I love character customization.
5. I am patiently waiting for the moment I can play as a blue mage.

Because I'm a Final Fantasy fan. I've beaten all the main series games.*

*Storyline, not all the extra stuff. I've seen the end credits and the conclusion of all the stories.

Because my friends could come with me.

Our crew is a mishmash of PC and console gamers. Most of us met for the first time in Phantasy Star Online back on the Dreamcast. We moved to PSOEP1+2 on the Gamecube and PC when it launched. Then we moved to FFXI when the PS2 version launched, picking up new members along the way. We called our LS the Knights of Deneb, since we were well known in PSO circles as "the Deneb 4 Crew" on account of always using Deneb server, Block 4 for our meetings. Played XI for 9 years, minus a brief stint in Phantasy Star Universe (terrible, horrible game), and about 4 or 5 months after the second Abyssea mini-expansion we all just drifted apart. A lot of us were getting out of college, finding jobs, starting families, and just didn't have the time. Plus most of us hated Abyssea (the lighting effect used to literally cause me migraines >.<) and it was becoming clear that it was the future of Vana'diel. I let my credit card expire and just never bothered to get a new one or worry about FFXI again. We were briefly excited to hear about XIVs launch, but this was 1.0. We had to wait for the console version that was never to come, and the reviews of the PC version nixed it for us. We didn't talk to eachother for several years.

Then about a year ago, I was in a local game shop and saw a magazine ad for a Sword Art Online CCG card game. I had never heard of it, but I liked the artwork and decided to check out the anime on a whim. It completely blew me away and filled me with a roaring, nostalgic longing for an MMORPG. And surprise! The new and revamped version of FFXIV was getting ready to come out!

I logged into an ancient facebook account I hadn't used in probably a decade, saw a couple familiar names and started sending messages out into cyberspace. The rest is history.

I live alone and need something fun to do at home when there's nothing going on with family, friends or work. Plus my FFXI friends play.

It's the best MMO on the market right now in terms of story, graphics and gameplay ( out of the few I have played). While I'm not really one of these guys who jumps from game to game, I have played "the big ones": WoW from vanilla through most of mists, Star Wars (all 3- pre and post NGE and TOR), FFXI, EQ2, GW2 and most recently Wildstar. Nothing comes close to FFXIV in terms of combining graphics, story and gameplay. SE is doing everything right at the moment.

This is a main reason for me. Not even mentioning that it's beautiful, fun, compelling, and somewhat addicting.

Well I played FFXI for a very long time.. I wanted a game that was like FFXI but required a little less commitment..
Well I defiantly got a game that required less time but it is nothing like FFXI except the races and mobs look like clones of FFXI..

Sounds a lot like my story, except I only played FFXI for half a year on xbox, and quit after my friends did, only to see them come back, so I started up again, then they quit again, so then I quit for good, and then they started back up again >< . Also, I stuck with Phantasy Star Universe and hit 180 long after all my friends abandoned the game. With a bit more support from the crap company that is Sega of America it could have been great.

I was the first of my group on the FFXIV bandwagon. First time I've been first on the bandwagon in any MMO, it feels nice.

I also play for nights like last night. Five hours of coil, dungeons and FATES on voice chat with LS mates. And a cup of hot chocolate. Boom!

Because it's fun. I've never seen a mesh of WoW and FF styles before. I really like the difficulty.

I would like to see many things added but am oddly patient enough to give it time.

Because I like the look of the game. I love the full controller support. I like how it's style reflects that of FFXI's. It doesn't look like any of the other rubbish out there.

Atmosphere.

There is something about the way the ambiance and music blend together with the game's smooth lighting that makes the entire world within the game feel like I place I want to be-- which is pretty important in any game that demands so much time.

Combine this with the cool early morning air from an open patio door, and the scent of burning of your favorite incense, and just standing by the water in Limsa Lominsa can be very relaxing.
