So did I. Then the level cap raised to 99 and obsoleted almost everything, and then it settled down again for a while and I was happy again. Then Adoulin came out, and suddenly everything was out again, with no sign of letting up. And my endgame shell exploded spectacularly, and I had out-of-game demands on time that would have made it hard to join a new one regularly. I found that in post-Adoulin FFXI, my previous endgame gear wasn't worth a darn anymore, and to getting into the new content to upgrade seemed incompatible with the more casual play I had time to do. That's when I quit, after playing constantly since February 2004.

So it was exactly that, gear obsoleting, that really pushed me away from FFXI. *

I still dislike gear obsoleting. But at least FFXIV didn't suck me in with the promise of stability -- I didn't play for many years expecting a level 75 relic to be eventually attainable with hard work and still relevant for the life of the game. I knew what I was getting into this time. The absence of gear swapping and having to spend all that time writing XML gear set code for every ability more than made up for what was clearly going to be a constant situation of being a little behind the curve for gear. The awesome graphics, the easier questing -- not having to have a laptop open beside me every time I wanted to do the simplest of quests -- and the easier casual play grabbed me and pulled me in. Joining FFXI friends in FFXIV was the final element that makes the latter where I want to be.

The trick is balancing the gear obsoleting so that the hard-casual player can keep up with the rate, staying a little behind the full hardcore but not too far. So far, that seems to be the case.

(* That and the New Dynamis. I adored the old Dynamis at level 75 cap. It broke my heart when they wrecked it.)

Got to ask, which issues were you having with the user interface?

Menus would not close when I clicked the X. Quest dialog or instructions would stay on the screen even after I completed the objective, with no means of getting rid of them besides logging out and logging back in. Someone told me about "/reload UI" after I'd uninstalled the beta, but that wasn't exactly included in the in-game tutorial. (Neither was /stuck - I guessed on that one and thankfully that function was working.)

I want to look at a pretty game, not wrestle with menus that block my view. I heard it was even worse in the first round of closed betas, when the UI boxes and menus would appear attached to your mouse cursor and thus would float around the screen. Smiley: laugh

A properly built user interface should be intuitive, easy to navigate, uncluttered, and subtle. It should fade into the background as a tool that allows you to interact with the environment while being as non-distracting as possible. If I wanted to play World of Menu Fantasy, I'd still be playing a text base game, or FFXI with all the LUA add-ons available.

Well it looks like those issues have been cleared up, the only complaint I would have is certain mobs are invulnerable unless you move them away from the terrain causing the issue and there are certain items you can collect that you cant because terrain doesn't have them in LoS, but this is usually way out in the middle of nowhere so they were probably missed during the betas or people treating the betas as a damn preview so not going to fault them for that.

Also **** monkeys, evil triple teaming monkeys of doom.

Well, of course we treat it as a preview. If they want actual QA or alpha testers they should be paying us to play it. Smiley: tongue

I reported all my bugs and uninstalled the game. If they truly have patched everything, I might go buy a copy after all.

Hmm, I'd say the solution to that is to make the gear upgradeable down the line when more content is released, or make the ability to add other stats to the gear through a secondary system. Smiley: nod

Man, I wanted to stay out of this topic so bad but I just HAVE to ask this.

What's the deal with wanting gear to last months, or even years? Are some people truly adverse to their stuff becoming obsolete? It should be the memories that matter, not some digital item that ultimately means nothing in the grand scheme of things...

Well, for one, I like the idea of working for a piece or a set of gear and being able to equip it for a long period of time. Something about getting gear, then having a new set that is better in every way 6 months later just doesn't appeal to me. It's like I'm basically throwing away perfectly good armor for no reason other than it's not new enough.

Perhaps it's a bit of nostalgia leftover from FFXI still and how gear there actually meant something, but to be honest, that's one of the things I liked about the game. I certainly didn't like the crazy grind to get that gear, and perhaps if that aspect had been removed I would have felt differently, but now, that mentality is pretty much engrained in me and every time I see a new mmo with vertical progression, I just groan to myself and wonder how long before I get bored of constantly trashing old gear that I worked for.

Memories and nostalgia are great, but I like the more physical quality of actually wearing gear I worked for and not just trashing it every new tier. I don't expect everyone to agree with that, it's just my personal preference.

But since you asked, let me ask YOU this. What do you have against gear that is upgradable as opposed to new tiers? If, as you say, digital items ultimately mean nothing, then why would you care if the gear was just upgradable as opposed to constant new tiers?

Hey, I'm the one asking questions here...nah, just playing, of course I'll answer.

In all honesty, I don't really care if a game decides to constantly update their endgame gear or just give us new tiers altogether as long as the game itself is fun; however, I will say that my personal preference is the latter. My personal reason for that is that even though I "grew up" with FFXI, I never got behind the whole "it took me forever to get this gear so it needs to last forever!" mentality that was prevalent in that game's itemization. It always just mystified me. If something needed replacing, then I would replace it with minimal complaint. Also, "Yay, I can add +2 (insert stat here) to my old endgame gear!" doesn't sound as good as "Yay, new, awesome looking gear with more (insert stat here) than this set I've been stuck with forever!" to me. And obviously, I also don't expect everyone to agree with that as well. I think the latter is a better carrot to chase than the former. (I will admit that the above scenario may not be as big as an issue with vanity systems in play, but I digress.) That's what MMO's are about to me: making memories with your friends/family, having fun, and chasing the next shiny new carrot.

EDIT:

Hey, if letting people upgrade their old gear through Magian/Zodiak-style questing makes them feel better about progression/variety, then why not let them?

I actually enjoy upgrading gear, so I'd be in favor of this. They could still have the newest raid gear be the overall BiS pieces, which would also keep more hardcore players happy.

I'm in favor of the above. I believe the newest stuff should always be the cutting edge, but if people would rather upgrade their old things to keep them relevant enough, then more power to them.

Another FFXI...I mean another FFXIV thread purporting the demise of the game...really! As to the official forum being mostly dead is just a result of Square's over zealous ban hammer mods, who will ban anyone for anything anytime, it's a wonder they have anyone left on there at all. Just natural after the first rush is over, we settle into the routine of complaints, brickbats and whining because we can.
So, no not dying, people leaving and joining everyday as per usual, rage quitters, blusterers, bullies may menace the forums but...everywhere I go is crowded to the point of ridiculousness, can't do a fate now without 10-20 others beating me to the start, stuff is dead before I can cast, everything is busy and thriving. I like it this way.

So...rage on people.
