Atma farming...Follow

I haven't logged on for a few weeks now primarily because I've been really busy IRL. (And I've been playing Hearthstone).

There are some game reasons, and a part of that is the Atma farming, but its a bit deeper than the repetitive content.

Personally I need another class, THF or NIN, new areas to explore, and something worth striving for. I don't feel the need to get my Atma weapon because I don't know what I'd do with it after I got it.

At this point in FFXI ironically I'd farm beehive chips and buy the damn thing. So obviously this is more my problem than it is the game's.

And FFXIV is probably the MMO I've played for the longest, continuously. Heck I'd play FFXI for a couple of months, hit a wall, and come back a year later. So I think for me, its just my modus operandi.

I have no doubt that I'll be back, but for the long haul I think FFXIV needs to add a little more substance, a bit slower pace, and a bit more variety; specifically for those that want to solo.

I am excited for the expansion, but Atma farming...eh not so much.

And, again, the issue of gear swapping in XI again raises its head. There were enough attractive gear pieces to make Dynamis a coveted destination because of gear swapping. In FFXIV, it would be hard to imagine as many worthwhile sidegrades to genuinely keep people interested in going through the content again and again and again.

All it would take is different viable play styles and different equipment that caters to those play styles. In FFXI something as simple as a sub job change or weapon change could entirely change the way the job was played. A bard puller had different priorities than a bard support mage, who both had different priorities than a bard melee. The same goes for dragoons purely dealing damage vs. dragoons that could solo or support a small group with healing breath, or scholars focused on healing vs. scholars focused on nuking, etc. etc.

Even if there were no gear swapping in FFXI, these play styles would all warrant picking up side grade gear for players dedicated to their jobs who wanted to play them in more than just one way. FF14 right now is very structured with everyone being limited to a single weapon type and many jobs having only a handful of useful cross class abilities to choose from. As long as either new and interesting play styles for different jobs were introduced, or equipment that could completely turn useless abilities into amazing ones were created (effectively doing the same thing, allowing for new play styles that otherwise weren't possible), I could very easily see horizontal progression working just fine.

I could maybe see them doing that. For instance, giving MNKs a nice evasion set to work with for tanking.

However, there would need to be content to support the need for a MNK tank. I think we touched upon it earlier but they are really deadset on 4 man/8 man parties (no deviations). I was just telling someone the other day that I thought it would be freaking fun to go duo Gorgimera together except...there's a time limit. Not realistically supposed to be killed with two players. Probably balanced around 4 or 8. I guess timing world 'bosses' (big FATEs) would have that effect.

I would honestly like to duo some of the dungeons in this game (or try my hand at soloing them). However, that isn't possible either.

Having side grades or alternate sets of gear really isn't the issue: the issue is more, "What content would we even use this for?"

It's possible.

Build your duo, then ask for two FC members who won't be entering Duty Finder for the next hour to go into the dungeon with you, and then once you're set, drop out. Since you didn't enter from Duty Finder, the numbers will not automatically be replenished. Tada, you can duo the dungeon.

Reminds me of Salvage. Can you get me in there so I can solo this!?

Yeah, I noticed though they're starting to make the newer dungeons less "duo/solo" friendly mechanic wise.

You know what? There really is no doubt or debates about this.

This crappy system damaged players' interest in FFXIV. It needs to be addressed.

Let's be honest, if anything damaged player's interest in XIV it would be XIV itself and the fact Yoshi himself said he's not diverting from this particular design (not the atma, but general design.) I still see the usual amount of players standing around Mor Dohna and Limsa after a major update so if any interest is damaged, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

I'd be pissed too if I didn't realize I could do Turn 5, Leviathan Extreme or Push through Second Coil instead of doing Animus, since ya know...Animus wasn't the only option.

You'd think they'd be smart and capitalize on their materia system. Give gear slots that only take specific types of materia, particularly job stat materia*. That shared gear? Well, now you have a choice. You can even get the drop twice (gear in retainers don't trigger the 'you got this one already' mechanic of item lotting.) Its RIGHT in their faces and nada. Hell, it would make crafting a literal gold mine. Not only would they have crafted gear they can profit from, but they'd ALSO have a chance to profit from non-crafted gear as well (not counting peeps that will just do their own melds, of course...but guess what? If you didn't have that craft leveled before...suddenly DoL have something to do. *cue Circle of Life music here*)

Ah well. We'll see if they figure it out eventually. Smiley: laugh

*Examples include Provoke Recast II, Thunder Duration V, etc

They started to in 1.2x but...I guess people felt the more generic route than the 'FFXI' route was the better way and constantly requested they get rid of "complex stats on gear" and "latent effects" and since yoshi admitted to never playing XI he probably thought they meant effects like how the WAR Relic in 1.x enhanced Vengence, or Stardust Rod enhanced Flare iirc.

Making up stuff is not difficult, balancing them accordingly is. For the dev team starting off with a basic system and perfecting it before starting to introduce more complex variables is ultimately the better direction to take. The first expansion will see a lot of complexity added to the game, and not even the crappy FFXI kind of "complexity".

Now that Novus weapons are upgradable to 110, you pretty much need to do Atma. The whole don't-have-to-do-it defense is out the window.

It really makes me sad. Atma is such a poor system, liked by none, tolerated by few.

"I play FFXIV because I can tolerate it!" - What an incredibly limp battle cry.

Watch me not do it.

Seriously.. It went ok for a while.. I'd get about an atma a day after a few hours of fates each night.

And then Upper La Noscea happened. I spent 4 days doing that zone. Never got the atma from it. I'm done with that now.

I'll look at it again when they pull their heads out of wherever they've been crammed and un-1990 the system. Until then, no.

Don't know why you got rated down for expressing your feelings on the Atma system. I fixed that. Apparently there is no longer any sensible arguments for this crappy system, so rate down is that best the defenders can do.

Those that already have passed the RNG section of this quest line seem to just not realize the effect off 100+ hours of useless FATE farming can have on players other than themselves. Players are quitting! How can anyone not see the inherent problem here?

In reality, I would expect the entire FFXIV community to unite together and ask for a better time-sink system than the type that can be found on some crappy iOS MMO app.

There was an argument on the Facebook group as to whether the RNG percentage was 2% or 5%.

Personally, I would believe a 2% rate and I would not believe a 5% rate. I've been a victim of RNG suckiness but one out of every twenty fates, on average, seems too high for the number of complaints we get. One out of fifty sounds much more like it.

Anyone got some numbers?

Thing is, because of the way random distribution works, even if the drop rate were 50%, there will always (ALWAYS) be those people who get one every time they hit a fate, and those people who get absolutely zero of them no matter how many fates they do. Simple statistics.

That's the reason purely random systems don't make for good progression in a video game.

The myth farming is what did me in.

I got all atma for my relic in a combined 13 hours or so and had all of them 2 days after the patch. Then, up until about 2 weeks ago, I only had 4 books done. I can't handle the incessant myth grinding and haven't logged in for 2 weeks due to this and my coil static crumbling.

I could totally buy a 2% drop rate for this. Farming Atma is starting to feel a bit like trying to HQ Genie Weskit in XI, which took me almost 500 tries to get something that was supposed to happen 1% of the time.

Myth farming is going to be a strain on me as well. However I'm pretty much going to resort to memorizing Crystal Tower and hanging around that.

Though, DPS queues... x.x

Though, it's odd. I tend to get a lot of commendations on my Dragoon so I guess I play it well, when I can play it. Still needing to work on getting my MRD up to snuff so I can us it to farm Myth and bypass this whole long wait bit.
#347 Jun 09 2014 at 2:43 PM Rating: Excellent
Ya I would queue on my WAR or join PF groups on it, but I can only do about an hour of farming before I lose all motivation. I'm not into torturing myself on a regular basis.

Looking at my sig, I realized the exact number was 476. Not quite 500, but still close. After 200 attempts or so, I kept at it to see just how badly the RNG was going to ***** me over. I may get to that point with Atma as well, though I haven't quite hit that point yet.

The worst RNG in the game is the DF. Turn that sucker on and plug in Titan EX. I'm 0/150 or so.

Also tired of book farming TooFar. On week 3 of my break and the laughable borderline insulting increase in the myth rewards for roulettes does not have me running back for 2.28.

I'll wait to see what the 2nd half of the 2.3 notes are but.....
#350 Jun 09 2014 at 10:14 PM Rating: Decent
My sub has about a month left on it. I'll also see what the notes look like, but I'll probably start burning through some of my Steam library. Need to try and live for more than 3 weeks on Don't Starve, and I also found my old Xenosaga discs for PS2.

I can tolerate a RNG as long as it's something semi-fun and makes me play my job properly. When I was a fresh 50, I didn't mind farming Ifrit HM to get a better weapon. What I hate about the ATMA grind is FATEs. No skill is required. Run in, spam some skills, leave. Then on top of this, I am beating on level 5 mobs. I have no idea how someone concludes that killing level 5 mobs to get a relic weapon is a good idea.
