I haven't started farming Atmas yet but I intend to start working on it soon. As a PLD I have both a sword and shield to upgrade. Do I just need one set of 12 atmas for the pair, or do I need 12 atmas for each? Do I need to have both items equipped at the same time while farming to get atmas to drop?
Any help is appreciated!

One set for the pair, by my understanding of it. It's hard to track down who's got what completed though and pick out where the sources are behind them. But there is a Paladin that has cleared with just one set.

Excellent, thank you. I'm assuming that you need to have both equipped then as well. I've been jumping into fates as I've been running around on the off chance I should get an atma to drop but I've had my Allagan shield equipped the whole time.
No, you only need the Zenith blade equipped. The shield doesn't matter until it's time to move on to the Animus step.
