I play on ps3 and I want to guage how well I'm doing dps-wise with the rest of the party on my monk. I was just wondering if I rank 3rd behind the off-tank in threat does that mean that I'm doing the most dps or do some abilities just build more hate than others?

Enmity differs per ability, as well as through raw damage.

For instance, Jumps from dragoons generate less enmity (some even reduce it) despite the damage they do. And a Bard with Quelling Strikes can still be far higher than you in damage, despite suppressing enmity generation and being lower on the list.

Mostly it's true that if you're higher in the list, you're doing more damage than everyone else. But there's other factors in play. Curing, certain abilities and damage done (which isnt a flat convertion of damage = enmity, but more of an arch) count towards it.

You -can- probably say that if you're on top of the list, you're putting out the most damage, but it's not exactly hard science.

If Emnity were a reflection of damage, WAR and PLD would be the best DD in game, right behind a WHM spamming Medica 2.

As it should be!

No you cannot.

Quelling strikes automatically takes BRD, BLM, and SMN out of the equation. Since there is no quantified measurement for enmity, you could not successfully gauge a SMN's DPS either since adding two enmity bars (pet and master) wouldn't be possible.
