XIVDB.com Awesome Look into the GameFollow

I saw someone mention FFXIVDB in another thread so I decided to google and came up with that site. It still looks like it has some kinks to work out, but It was awesome looking at the Item and Skill lists. As someone who spends a lot of time carousing game wiki pages I enjoyed it quite a bit. Looking at the Skills for each class/job has gotten me even more excited for the game. The in-game skill list seemed lacking, but the site also lists quest and job skills. Pouring over the lists has started to give me insight into how each class/job plays and most of them are pretty awesome. I'm not sure I like how Bard's songs seem to work, only being able to have one up at a time seems pretty lame, but it is a throwback to older FFs such as FFT. I guess it will still allow them to be solid DDs in some situations.

The item selection is really the only gripe I have with the game ATM. I really enjoyed FFXI's "OMFG EPIC LEVEL 30 ITEMZ FOREVER!" gear progression over an incremental stat gains. It was always fun running around town and suddenly seeing someone pimped out with all of those items you could only dream about. It made gear more meaningful when you ended up getting it as well. In FFXIV it will probably be "Hey, look at that guy, he has the level 40 version of my weapon!" for a while. I know that they have Relics and such, but it was still nice having those middle of the road Epic items that everyone pined over. I guess I'll just sit here and wallow in my own nostalgia whilst hoping to create new nostalgia on FFXIV in a couple months.

I think materia melding will fill some of those holes for you, as the looks of it we will be able to meld some gear and turn it into a great peace of gear! But im with you it would be cool to have some mid and low lvl cool gear, gotta make it fun for all levels not just 50!

That stuff isn't even in FFXI anymore. No one liked that, you just think you did because of your rose tinted glasses. As someone who wouldn't be invited to a party as Sam unless I had those stupid Mee Deggi the Punisher gloves, and then killed him 200 times without a drop, I can gladly say F*CK THAT SH*T.

for the record though, I went 1/2 on bounding boots, 1/1 on the sam/nin haste boots and 2/3 on emp pin

Don't make me remember my SAM, I loved that class but holy god worrying about ACC still gives me nightmares. {Weapon Skill} {Can I have it?}

I played early, could never get those gloves but I had every other ACC item I could. If there's one type of player that welcomes the changes from FFXI to what we have now it's an FFXI SAM...

Way to make a biased blanket statement about what people like and don't like. I loved camping NM's. I had awful luck too, going 0/100+ (I stopped counting) on my bravo's subligar for Odqan... and you were lucky if he spawned 2-3 times in a 24 hours period (spawned only in fog weather from 5:00-9:00). I still very much enjoyed the thrill of the claim, the fights, even without the drops.

Don't get me wrong, the awful drop rates and sometimes absurd claim conditions stunk and I don't miss those, but I do miss the epic gear that lasted for 40-50 levels in some cases and the thrill of the claim/kill.

Well then it's your lucky day pal! FFXI is still a game!

And even the Queen f*cking Bee of RNG and long spawn nms has dropped this mechanic in favor of measured, tangible character growth with a ticket system. I think I'm safe in saying you are the minority.

Wow, no need to get all up in arms. I thought we were just having a discussion. I'm not saying I'm the majority, I was merely pointing out that you made a blanket statement, claiming that no one liked that, which is false. I'm certainly not the only person who liked that. I merely commented because of the presumption you made, that no one liked camping NMs or liked the horizontal gear progression of FFXI. No need to get all riled up and start swearing because I like something that you don't. Sheesh.

Horizontal Gear Progression is different than making a level 30 item that is ESSENTIAL for a level 75 character. That makes the progression boring, IMO. You get something early and then never need to replace it. It makes all future gear meaningless, and hurts crafters, and eliminates certain content because nothing is better than that one item. Since it's obtainable so early, it also needs to be made very rare and the only way to do that is with insane drop rates and few chances to obtain it, instead of skill.

Horizontal Progression is already in FFXIV in many forms. One example is the Primal Weapons. There are 3 weaposn for each class. You would be lucky and happy for ANY of them, and they all suit different needs. For instance, for WAR, you have the str and dmg focused Ifrit Axe, the HP on-hit and Acc+ Moogle axe, or the high Crit dmg and Crit chance+ Garuda Axe.

Even further, if you built your gear to fit in Grand Company Gear, the highest Tier GC Axe could be better than those, because they got buffs with GC arbiter buff thingy and by wearign a requisite amount of gc gear.

All three items can suit your gear needs, depending on the gaps in how you built your own gear with materia. THAT is a good design, IMO.

I hated NM hunting, but I did love the feel for FFXI's gear progression. I remember farming my **** off for days to be able to afford a Hauby(Back in the crazy RMT inflation days). When I finally got it, I never got rid of it. I loved how it was still relevant and useable even at 75.

That's cool, your post just seemed very angry, like you were about to hulk out or something. I'm extremely excited about the different options of primal weapons, as that's precisely what I'd like to see in-game, more options for similarly leveled gear that are all viable for different situations. I'm very eager to try out some of those primal battles and even work towards a relic or two.

Yeah, the materia system adds such great gear flexibility that the changes to it excite me a lot.

It was already an awesome system, but now you have constant forward progression, versus the old system where you could easily blow up your double melded item and have to start from scratch.

Soo, I see that I probably wont be able to use the cracked materia in my old gear to get those stats up at or above the darklight. My items levels are probably going to limit the amount I can increase the stats by. Here's to hoping the exchange rate of those items will get me enough of that exchange "currency" to purchase the 5-7 pieces of darklight I'll be needing.

I still can't believe people enjoyed that. Camping in 1 spot literally for hours with 10 other people, hoping that you get your quickest skill off first and then hoping that the item you want actually does drop. Yeah, maybe once you get it, it feels nice and you feel special, but god if I ever have to deal with that garbage in a MMO again, its an instant turnoff. Specially when some items ended up being required items and you either accumulate absurd amounts of gil or waste your life trying to get it to drop.

Well, that sucks. I was planning to play BRD but im deterred to play it after reading this. Nevertheless, I'll keep an eye close on BRD's future development.

I want them to bring back NM too, only with a much higher drop rate. It's exciting when you spend 3-6 hours to get a claim, but overly punishing when you don't get a drop. Give the mob 100% chance to drop 1 of 2 or 3 useful items, that way if you don't get o.kote for example, maybe you'll get emp pin for your other class. (not those specific items obviously, but something useful.) The NM could even drop vanity items so that hunting them isn't required to advance, but still there for folks that enjoy camping them. I would definitely camp a NM for some sweet sunglasses or a nice shirt or something to cruise through town in.

Me too. Half the thrill for me was just seeing that NM name finally pop up after waiting. I agree, make it 100% drop, or maybe like 75% drop but on the good item, so you don't have to camp forever. I realize it's not for everyone, but there were quite a few people who did enjoy it. I actually found it quite a nice change of pace... I could watch TV, craft, or do something else in between windows, then get focused up and get the adrenaline pumpin when it was go time. I'd love to see NM's make a comeback outside of fate, as long as they aren't dropping stuff that is essential to level, I understand how that would bottleneck the game.

But don't they have that? I mean FATEs are NMs and many of the nms from 1.0 became fates. I'm not sure if items drop if you contribute enough though, but that would be the best addition.

Higher-end fates or 'endgame' fates will have chances to drop loot. But the low level ones give you Grand Company Marks, which will count towards all the GC loot that is in pretty high demand.

I agree that some unique drop from NM fates would be a cool addition. Though I think it would make it more interesting of those drops were more meteria then equipment based.
#20 Jun 20 2013 at 3:46 PM Rating: Good
That seems interesting, but how would the drops work if the whole thing is contribution-based and anyone can join at any time?

I believe way back they stated that anyone who contributed had a chance to get loot, and it might be a small chance, but for the FATEs where there was loot it would be random per person.

It's cool Louis, I understand your anticipation XD. I wasn't really saying that I liked how some of the gear was acquired, but having those sought after items at all levels was fun. It made going back to level up a new job all that much more exciting, at least to me.

That aside, I hope that they add loot to NM FATES. Even if you have to farm them a few times to get a drop it would be nice. The amount of gil you receive from them is negligible.

I think they would. I mean, if they didn't this would make certain items we currently have unobtainable, as 1.0 had regular roaming NMs that dropped VERY nice gear. Gear that made you drop everything and get, and last from 30-45ish. The only reason these awesome items would drop off was because they were unsocketable with materia, thus you could make a better item with a double meld or better.

I really enjoyed those super uber low level items, but really enjoyed the bcnm method of acquisition rather than world spawn nms.
