Any recommendation on a pad? I thought I read that the PS3 controller is compatible but I really don't want to invest that much into it. On the other hand I don't want to underspend and get something of inferior quality. Any happy medium for a quality pad?
Well Yoshi-P and his crew have been sporting the standard
logitech gamepad to great effect. It's a lot cheaper than that in most stores though.
Then there is also a
Snakebyte Ps3 wired controller for $10. When my girlfriend and I started up on FFXI again we bought two of these and they worked great on PC. However her right thumbstick ended up breaking somehow after a few months. Mine is still fine though.
Then there's always the wired 360 controller from
Game Stop that I'm currently using for everything, even though I do prefer the Playstation controllers. It also comes in black and possibly other colors as well for $26.
I suggest the 360 controller from Game Stop. It functions perfectly with all games just like an official Microsoft one, but for $14 less. I rarely buy things from them, but this is something that I highly recommend for all PC gaming. Since pretty much all games that allow a controller on PC today support the 360 controller it makes setup almost non existent. IMO it's the best value for the price. My friend has had his same one for 3+ years and mine has been kicking fine for the past 6 months.
I believe Snakebyte was also the company that released the official FFXIV controller, however I don't know if it's quality is much better than the $10 PS3 model.
One last thing. Do NOT use a wireless controller via a USB cord (PS3 style) unless you research what it takes to properly run it on your system. I attempted to do so to play FFXI last year and it resulted in many BSODs, even with a program to run it. Getting a wired controller that is plug and play is much more convenient.
