Don't get hung up on the word. Maybe it was called backstory then, but it was the same concept.
Things like
What is going on around me?
Why am I here?
Who is that bad guy and why is he all pissed off?
That princess is hot, is she single?
Why does my main character have such an attitude problem?
What is the significance of this dungeon in relation to my current task?
How do you prove you exist? Maybe we don't exist....
have always been important. If it wasn't, we'd all be playing something other than an RPG. So yes, a lack of "lore" will always be out of place in a game that defines itself as an RPG whether online or otherwise. I agree it's probably not terribly productive to compare XIV to XI in terms of... anything. But don't dismiss the importance of having rich ongoing lore in an RPG that has a monthly sub.
