I played FFXI from its NA release up until 2010. after that i tried coming back a few times but with all the changes i just could not get back into it.
I was never an "end game person" as I enjoyed the level grind and the party dynamics of the game.
The storyline took a backseat to the adventures and quests and grind.
If I were to start up on this game would I be disappointed?
Reading the Forums I cannot tell if this is party oriented or solo oriented.
Please if anyone has played FFXI and enjoyed some of the similar things I enjoyed would you suggest I purchase this game?
***Update***
Got the game last night and I am digging it....working now ready to go home and grind.....
Question: I got my GLA to 10 last night if i switch to PUG does my character drop to lvl 1?
I dont quite understand the job change thing
Am I a lvl 10 character with lvl 1 PUG skills?
Or is it like starting a new job in FFXI?

They did away with Character levels a while ago, so it's like switching in 11 now. You start back at 1. The major difference is that abilities are not (or at least none I have found) level locked. once you unlock an ability in one class, you can use it (if it is a cross class skill) on any other class.
To be honest, the best thing to do is to level up con until you get cure, then switch to which ever class you want. If you are really diehard at leveling, you can try getting to protect and stoneskin (not that bad), and that way you can have those abilities all the way through. Protect and stoneskin especially soloing can be worth their weight in MP. As well, leveling Pug up to second wind Gla has Rampart and Sentinel, and the list does kinda go on and on (my preference has always been around the def abilities, though things like Leg sweep are nice).
You could go the old school route of getting all the abilities that make life easier (by complicating your life and leveling up every class), or you can focus on only the abilities that are focused around the job you want to play. Both ways work quite well, and as of now, there really is no longer a *right* and *wrong* way to level with the exception of, if you want to play as a job (and you really need to at end game), you will need to level up your appropriate sub classes (there is one required and one optional sub class for each job).
Oh, and to further clarify (since I think I kinda went way off topic in that), you will always be the level of your current class (even if you are on a job). Your abilities for your class are limited to the level of your current class, and to the level of whatever class you are taking skills from (e.g. a level 1 Mrd who leveled whm to 50 has access to raise... But, a level 50 Mrd with a level 1 whm doesn't).
