Square has decided to make XIV very demanding on system requirements. While a low score will
run the game, it may not run very well. Some people have reported a benchmark score rated as unable to play, but the game is still playable for them. However, if your PC is around 3+ years old (at the time of this post), you're going to want to look into upgrading.
Here are some useful links for that:

Getting Started:
For a complete, step by step walkthrough of getting your account set up, see below.
In order to play FFXIV, you need to set up a Square Enix account. Note that this is
not the same as the
Square Enix Members Account you may have set up in the past. Nor is it the same as your Play Online login. In March '10, the Square Enix Members website login was changed to use your Square Enix account.
If you have a Square Enix account from your FFXI days but can't remember your login information:
Square Enix online/E-mail support Square Enix phone support:
858-790-7529 --Available Mon-Fri 9am-6pm PST. This is not a toll free number. Support center is located in California.
If you had an account previously and that account had a security token linked to it but you no longer have your token, you will need to contact SE support. You cannot log in to your Square Enix account without the registered token.
Due to SE's RMT detection, I strongly advise against simply making a new Square Enix account. Multiple accounts is one of the things the auto-ban bot looks for.
Help! I have an FFXIV Promotional/Expansion/Registration Code and don't know how to use it! 1.

6. Profit
The following is a cut/paste of
my Setting up FFXIV wiki guide:
Setting up your Final Fantasy XIV Account from start to finish Square Enix Accounts This is a requirement in order to play XIV. Unlike FFXI, all players must log in with their Square Enix account information.
1.
Click here to begin registering your Square Enix Account
2. Enter your corresponding region -- This is very important! Your game software must match your registered region.
3. Proceed through the steps to enter in the rest of your information and complete the registration.
Setting up Payments Final Fantasy XIV has a monthly fee in order to play.
See here for full details of pricing. You will need to register your form of payment before you're able to fully register your XIV account, so we'll cover that first.
Paying with Debit or Credit 1.
Click here to access your Square Enix Account Management Page -- Then log in.
2. Select Register/Update Card Information from the menu on the left.
3. Select Register/Update.
4. Register with Click and Buy. This can be done directly from the SE Account Management Page you just entered.
5. Register your personal and card information.
Paying with Crysta Currency Crysta is Square Enix's new form of online currency. It can be used to purchase game time as well as other things in the future.
Click here for more details on Crysta.
Purchase Crysta using Debit/Credit 1. Make sure your Debit/Credit payment is set up. See the previous section.
2.
Click here to access your Square Enix Account Management Page.
3. Click Add Crysta from the menu on the left.
4. Select the amount you wish to buy, then select Click and Buy as your payment option.
5. Follow the proceeding steps.
Note:
Linking your card to your new Click and Buy account puts a temporary $2.50 charge on it. It is automatically reversed though. Purchase Crysta using Paypal 1.
Click here to access your Square Enix Account Management Page.
2. Click Add Crysta from the menu on the left.
3. Select the amount you wish to buy, then select Ultimate Pay as your payment option.
4. Follow the proceeding steps on the popup screen to confirm your payment through Paypal.
Note:
You will receive two E-mails shortly after doing this. One from Paypal confirming your purchase and one from SE confirming your Crysta balance. Registering your FFXIV Account Now, you will need to set up your Final Fantasy XIV account. This is relatively simple. To begin:
1.
Click here to access your Square Enix Account Management Page.
2. Click Select Service from the menu on the left.
3. Select Final Fantasy XIV (note: there are currently two icons for this. Pick the one with the graphic on the right).
4. Click Add Service Account.
5. Enter in your FFXIV registration code. This code is found on the back of your game manual.
BE SURE TO KEEP THIS CODE SECURE. DO NOT THROW IT AWAY. Important note to Beta Testers:
This is the point where you can set up your XIV account to use your Beta information. * Selecting FFXIV for your service account will allow you to keep your character data (but not progress/inventory) from the Open Beta. This will also let you keep already registered promotional codes already registered to your Open Beta service account. You will only be able to do this however, if you used the Save Data option when creating your Open Beta character.
* Selecting New Service Account will create a brand new FFXIV service account and will NOT use your Open Beta information.
Now, you'll need to apply the payment method you have already set up.
1. Click Options List.
2. Click Add New Options to add your 1st character slot to your XIV account.
3. Confirm, and select the payment intervals you wish to use: 30, 60, or 90 days. -- Note: the first 30 days are free and you will not be charged.
Entering Promotional Codes The Collectors and Standard edition of FFXIV come with different Promotional Codes. They include bonus services such as Onion Helm, Garlond Goggles, Asuran Armbands and in the future, Expansion Codes. They are entered in the same fashion as you enter your XIV registration code:
1.
Click here to access your Square Enix Account Management Page.
2. Click Select Service from the menu on the left.
3. Select Final Fantasy XIV (note: there are currently two icons for this. Pick the one with the graphic on the right).
4. Click Add Service Account.
5. Add your Promotional Code.
Special thanks to Mikhalia for being my account setup guinea pig!
