I'd really hate to have to mute anyone.

No, posting in old threads and bumping them back up to the top. Nothing NDA related.

Bring up a previously addressed topic: "Go find an old thread!"
Post in an old thread: "Stop necroposting!"

The key is to keep making the same discussions over and over again, but with synonyms. It's better to constantly begin the same discussion anew than to continue it from where it left off, for some reason.

One solution would be to lock year old topics. That way the info will still be there but we wont be able to post in them.

Who has said to go find an old thread? Every topic being discussed today is covered in the first 2 pages.

No one in particular that I've personally seen lately, not on this board anyway.

But it is something that's come up from time to time, in the general sense. Whether by searching and just posting to what appeared the most relevant (regardless of date) or because someone specifically said "there's a thread for that already" or something. The WoW forums used to be rife with that kind of stuff, especially the latter.

Yeah I really never got the issue with necroposting. It has the same ability to stimulate conversation as any new post does.

I agree, if it's just someone trolling then you shouldn't but often when I read a necropost it's someone who has stumbled across something they find interesting or actually taken the time to search for something. If a game (1.0) has been around quite some time and someone joins after 18 months it's very likely that they may be guilty of necroposting. I do not think it serves any of us if someone is just bumping their own thread or not contributing anything other than to just agree etc.

I guess it was a bit random in this case because the discussion was in regards to 1.0 content, so it wasn't really a relevant thread to bump. dunno why it would be worth getting muted over though.

So just erase the entire 1.0 archive.

Amirite?

We can deal with non-FFXIV related topics, and we can can keep around the obvious trolls on the forum because "there isn't a lot going on right now", but posting in an older thread (even if it is sometimes relevant) is mute worthy?

Smiley: dubious

I did it... Unless I started a trend of NecroPosting... I commented on the "What GM's do in thier spare time..." thread. However, I think people should read it because I have it booked marked now and really enjoy reading it.

Anyway, sorry, Wint.

I don't think necroposting qualifies as "keeping a post going"... especially since they're usually months or years old.

Lucky 777th post :)

Folks are more forgiving of necroposts when the new respondent starts off with, "Hey I know this is a really old topic, but the topic is still relevant and I can't find an answer anywhere else. Help!"

Wasn't yours.

The two posts in question was 1) Ostia crowing about Wada quitting and 2) Ishihara responding to a thread that was 3 years old and arguing to a person who hasn't posted in 2 years.

I would rather have new threads started than old because in both of these threads the info was incredibly dated and no longer relevant, and the posts that did the necro-bump weren't even related to a specific argument being made (well, Ishihara was going on about how he thinks ARR sucks so that wasn't anything new either). So yes, make new threads. I'm glad we all understand each other.

So if Square announces a necromancer job... Would it be in poor taste to announce it via necropost?

If you could find an old thread already discussing XIV Jobs, I would appreciate the irony Smiley: tongue
#21REDACTED, Posted: Mar 31 2013 at 7:43 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Wow FFXIV is going to have necromancer job? Was this leaked. I couldn't find it on the FFXIV NA site and i cant read Japanese to look at the JP site.

Early beta indicated that a Necromancer job was in the works... But then they realized that the WHM was filling this niche already. The Conj/WHM was raising dead party members and sending them to kill monsters and bosses throughout the world. They realized that implementing a class that resurrected monsters in the world and sent them to their inevitable doom was ill-conceived and emulated an existing class/job model, and that further implementation could gravely threaten the Conjurer and White Magi found throughout the World.

If you don't want people to necropost then do your job and close all threads you think are not relevant anymore. Cannot be that hard, can it? What you get now is that some poor soul reads up about some three months old topic - or some post that falls into your definition of and responds to it... and you're going to mute him or her. Is that what you really want, or so you just want to stop necroposting?

Come on, you cannot be that lazy, Win, right?

Or you can be personally responsible for yourselves instead of needing a babysitter.

Just a thought.
