Is there away to get back to an old style Quest Journal without a UI mod? I just hate how it works now.

I don't believe so. The UI's were forced to change theirs, b/c they were set up for the older style and were crashing.
A lot of times one UI does something, and the rest copy it. This was something done first by Mythic.
