I recently created my first character and decided to delete her due to stats placed in wrong skill.

When I tried to log on later after I pick a realm for the new character I keep getting a message saying 'You can not log on to this realm for x hours and x mins' x is counting down currently 7 hours 40 mins.

Is this normal for a free trial to restrict access or is it a bug?

It sounds like the server you first chose was clustered with another. On clustered servers it is possible to have characters in more than one realm if you had them there before clustering went live (clustering is the sharing of certain zones). In order to prevent a form of cheating, a time limit was placed on logging into a character in a different realm in the same cluster (8 hours).

If you aren't changing realms, it sounds like a bug and you should contact tech support- they are actually very helpful in solving technical issues like this.
