I've been in the game about 1.5 years now and I have a nagging question coming to mind.

Background: I've had the understanding that as far as speccing out a toon goes, there's a hugh difference for pve action vs. rvr when considering your top-end spec training. The difference is that your spec training only goes to the level of your opponent. For instance, if I have 50+11 slash training and hit my level 50 rvr opponent for XXX damage, it's the same as if I had 50+0 slash training. Since my opponent is level 50, that's where my top-end damnage would max out. So the theory I've read on the net and in-game is that for rvr (only) there is no reason to go past 50 in your training for damage output, stealth, envenom, etc.

Now as this theory goes, in pve the mobs your hitting can go higher than 50. So 50+11 slash would be extremely beneficial if your hitting a lev 60 mob for instance.

So here's my problem. I have a SC'er so getting +11 on all skills is no problem, but as I move up in RR...at lev RR5 I'll hit +50 (with regular training, SC, and rr bonus) on all my skills.

If the theory that I stated above is true, am I to think that at RR5 I'm just as powerful as I will be at RR10 since all my rvr oppoents will all top out at level 50? Now that makes no damn sense to me at all. If so, what's the point of my infiltrator going past RR5 (besides the obvious point of gaining more RR abilities)?

Please give me all your thoughts if you have a lot of experience with this game and correct my thinking lol. Thanks.

just to clear some things up:

rr5 is considered "lvl 51" because your dps goes from 16.2 to 16.5 and your af will raise slightly if you're wearing lvl 51 armor.

when training slash/thrust/crush, the general consensus is that you want to have an effective 51. 39+12 slash at rr2 etc.
this doesn't hold true for speclines like 2h, pole, dw, cs etc, though. speccing higher in those lines will tighten damage variance though, meaning you will see consistent numbers, instead of damage all over the board. Spec anything higher in these lines and you will be doing it solely for the style bonuses.

stealth and envenom only need a effective 50, stealth because it's been tested that anything more does not change your detection radius, envenon because the last poison is lvl 50.

I don't think it's any different for pve, though, as you theorized in your next paragraph.

You are sort of correct about a rr5 doing the same damage as a rr10. Base dps would be 16.5. However, you have to take into account their stats, RA's, and damage table. Every class is on a different damage table. Tanks, hybrids, etc. Each damage table is different, and each class within that table is slightly different as well.
