Most Popular MMORPG?Follow

I can't seem to find any information and I always get into a debate with my friend on what's better - EQ or DAOC.

His reasoning is that EQ is because it's bigger.
I think that's bunk. It might be bigger - but it don't mean it's better.

Anyways, out of curiousity can someone lead me to a link or tell me the top 5 or 10 MMORPG's right now?

Thank you.

I played EQ for 3 years and with the blunder that we know as SOE I dont think i'll be going back anytime soon. I like DaoC better cause of the player base, good graphics, and a great system overall. Content is limited but not heavily populated. There's always something to do. EQ imho needs to overhaul 100% anything pre-luclin for it tobe useful other then just adding these so called "Hot-Spots".

EQ and DAOC attract the same type of players but with different playstyles. EQ attracts people who like building things with toothpicks. DAOC attracts those who like building things with popsicle sticks. You can accomplish much more in DAOC investing less time, energy and resources than you can in EQ.

Some of the differences include:

Corpse runs: Gotta go get your corpse which has all your belongings on it in EQ; in DAOC you leave a gravestone at which you can go back to and pray to regain a portion of experience lost - or not. Your choice.

Experience loss on death: You can not only lose bunches of experience dying in EQ, but you can lose levels also. In DAOC, you cannot lose levels - kind of a get out of jail free card if you use the time right after you level to explore new areas and try new things.

Soloability: Most classes have a lot of difficulty soloing in EQ. Granted, experienced players may have figured out ways to solo most classes, but the beginner will find things much, much more difficult. In DAOC, every class can solo effectively provided you keep your primary line of attack skills close to your level.

Size of world and traveling: I haven't played EQ in years, but before you could teleport most places, getting anywhere in EQ not only meant a long trip, but most times, a dangerous trip. In DAOC, taking a horse means you won't be attacked. Granted, the trip is a lot more boring than in EQ, but it doesn't take nearly as long either.

Goal oriented PvP: On regular EQ servers, it doesn't exist as EQ is a PvE world. If you like PvP, DAOC has it in abundance in the form of RvR (realm vs. realm) combat. Split into 3 warring realms, they fight to overtake each other's keeps and steal each other's national treasures (relics).

Because you build your character in DAOC with popsicle sticks, many EQ players see it as too easy. They come to DAOC, say huh? and go back to EQ. However, DAOC did woo many players from EQ because back when EQ was the best game in town, people played it whether they liked the mechanics of it or not. When DAOC was released, removing a lot of the toothpick parts of EQ, those players loved it.

Right now, Anarchy Online is considered one of the better games online. Personally, I don't like the modern/post-modern theme. Somehow, trading sword and sorcery for assault rifles and nanos just doesn't work for me. However, as the Shadowlands expansion pack (which includes the original game) can be had for $10 and includes a month's free play, it's worth the investment to try it for yourself. Forget any 7-day trial you might come across because that is not enough time to really learn the game.

My own views on this are that MMORPG is a misnomer - there is little or no roleplaying in any of them... Anyway, personal gripe aside, having played both (for some time too), I come down on the side of DAoC. Reasons? Better class of players, the world is laid out better, less twinking, high end play less of a drag (high end EQ play seems very methodical, and looses much of the 'fun' elelment of lower level play). Still, in the end, it's all down to personal prefernce - Good luck in your choice! ;)

Having played EQ, DAOC, Horizons and AC2 I have to go with DAOC for all the reasons that are mentioned above in the Toothpick analogy.

ok well i have played many MMORPG's so here is my look at them

DAOC- mosre for people who like to do things on there own and PVP. I have done much soloing in this game. Much more then grouping. But then again the only toon i really played was a hunter on Midgard. Also it is alot easier to build your character on here. Tradeskill and Level wise. But DAOC has more cahracter diversity then lets say EQ. BUt no where near SWG. You can have 2 Eldy's in your group and then be completyly different unlike EQ where if you have 2 Wizards they are the same.

EQ- Very group friendly. Also very solo friendly if you pick the right class. And of course Raids, raids and raids. Stuff you raid in EQ is wayyy harder then DAOC. Also lots more to do in EQ then DAOC. EQ has a more indepth leveling system including leadership exp, alternate exp, tribute system, and adventure points. All needed to build your character. The wolrd like i said is about 200% bigger then DAOC. IT is almost as big as SWG. So of course there is less walking. You have Nexus portals, druids or wizards to port you, and PoK books. So getting here to there takes about 5mins instead of almost an hour in DAOC. But the graphics are not to great and a lot of the people are just jerks.

SWG- Ummmm big. This is a big game and with the expansion coming out soon will be even bigger. Plus there is alot you can do profession wise. Many to chose from. Plus you can do more then on a character. This game is very very player friendly. Everything is done by players from merchents to building citys. But the hunting part is dull. Not very fun. Can be at times but if you are like for hardcore exp grinding stay clear of this. I played this for about a month and I had a marksman and he has ranged support 2 and rifles 3. Which isnt far at all. Travel is very slow to. The planets are hugh so it takes a long time to walk to certain parts.

Runescape- All I can say is it is free and fun in small doses. I think this is aimed more for little kids.

So the final thing is it is all up to you to chose. I like eq and DAOC but I played EQ for so long it is all the same to me now. So I would go with DAOC, but like I said it is all up to you,

DAoC is a great game. With SI, ToA, and Catacombs, there's always something to do! There's MANY quests, kill tasks, instanced dungeons, instances within dungeons, Master Levels, Battlegrounds, RvR, Crafting, even decorating your house!!
Darkness Falls is a cool place to go, with awesome armor/weapons there to purchase using appropriate seals that drop off of certain monsters within DF. Also, with the instances, you can get aurulite, which is also used to purchase armore/weapons in Catacombs. The Master Levels are hard, and when you get 90+ people trying to complete the battlegroup steps, it can be pretty boring, but hey- your ML just went up :).
I'll choose DAoC over any other game :D.
