Good people in FFXIFollow

Background: I had a horrible day in real life yesterday, and I wasn't expecting much out of FFXI. After weeks of advancing, my weekly Nyzul static has been stillborn for 5 weeks due to someone losing his internet and everyone waffling about whether we should wait on him. So, I basically expected to log on, listen to people shuffle their virtual feet, and log off frustrated. Instead, we got a pickup (Oddin below) and went 4/4 on floors. More notably, we killed Argus, the drop appraised to a Peacock Amulet, and the following happened:

1) http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss24/raynael/1.jpg (note what I lotted vs. what Oddin lotted)
2) http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss24/raynael/2.jpg
3) http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss24/raynael/3.jpg

This guy was well-geared, but by no means super-wealthy (no Salvage gear, etc.). It was just a really magnanimous thing to do, and I still don't really know what to say, except that it's nice to remember that there are some truly generous people out there. I'd never met the guy before at all. I think it'd be nice to be able to be capable of just /wave'ing 2.3m and feel like you'd gained something more valuable, by putting a smile on someone's face.

Edit: I should add, Zooey did me a huge favor too, but she's an RL friend and pulled a Dryad Staff on the previous run so it wasn't as shocking ;)

I did the same for a PLD who needed a Parade Gorget. I had one drink left and his hadn't dropped, so I popped one more and when it dropped:

"I failed to mention I already got mine, lot it :3"

Every day you hear about greedy players overlotting and the insanely rich getting even richer. It's refreshing to hear tales of overwhelming kindness on the forums for a change. I've done a few good deeds in my day, unsung but nonetheless appreciated by the recipients of good fortune. I've rarely been the recipient myself, mind you, but I'd just as soon be stoney broke than pass up the opportunity to help out someone in need when I have the means to do so.

I dunno, maybe im a soft touch but I think if more people were as magnanimous as the player who helped you out the game would be a better experience for everyone.

It is always good to see things like this happen. There are a lot of good people out there, but somehow often what got talked here are mostly negative things in the game -- either a design problem or people problem.

Congrats for not just the item, but more importantly, you met a good person. We need more positivity in the game. Even the game is not perfect, it is not really that bad at all.

What a heart warming story. With all the negativity abound, stories like this give me hope for the future of online games.

Edit: Also, Congrats on the gift. Not the PCA, but the gift of friendship. I forsee many happy times to be had between the two of you.

I did the same thing as this, albeit on a smaller scale, with the Utsu: Ni drop from this BCNM. I wasn't a NIN at the time and didn't see myself being for the forseeable future so I gave my Ni scroll to a NIN who was with us. He was nice enough to offer me the gil he had for it (like 80k) but I let him keep it. It's nice to know not all good people left the game years ago lol.

Two months later I needed a Ni scroll and couldn't find anyone to do the BCNM >.> Is that irony? lol

Did something like this last night. Had a shellmate who just got mnk to 70 ask for help on dune boots. Keep in mind there are two other 75 mnks in the shell who also asked for help with dune boots over the past year.

I logged on last night and he was kiting it around and needed help with it and aggro. I was in the area since I was working on moogle missions the night before and headed out after arguing with myself.

Long story short, I showed up and helped him finish the NM off and dune boots dropped (100% of course). He lotted and I passed. It was very hard to pass on it seeing I had wanted them since my mnk hit 70 last year.

I felt good for passing and not begging to lot against him. It's also a good feeling to be called a great person, and to me that's more rewarding than a few digital bits attached to my character that may or may not help me out more. Someone who's so excited and will look at that item and remember your name as that guy that helped them get it. I realize now that impressions, memories, and friends are more valuable than any digital piece of gear.

Oh and congrats on your new piece of gear! =)

I'm glad to read stories like this one. Makes me feel good that there are at least some good people among the thousands of selfish a-holes that play the game.

Me personally, if I have a day off and don't really feel like doing much of anything in game (which surprisingly happens a lot lol) I just start helping with random shouts in whitegate. Anything from soloing someones AF to helping out with CoP/ACP/MKD missions. It kinda feels good not only to help someone, but to actually use your knowledge, resources, and gear for something other than your own gain. (and I must admit, I like showing off a bit too XD) I think more people should do things like this because there's no way any of us get through this game without some form of help and that shouldn't be just limited to people helping you to get the same thing.

In saying that, it really makes me think of why people REALLY play this game. I mean most people grind through levels so they can acquire gear, to beat down something for better and more rare gear, which may be used to farm so that they can get more money for...more gear? Then once they have all the gear that they want...they start another job and start the cycle again.

Ok...maybe everyone doesn't do that...but I've seen it happen way too many times to deny it...even I am somewhat guilty of it as well...

I'll stop ranting now, I really gotta learn not to post stuff when I'm getting off of work and tired lol

Right on! Congrats on your PCA!

One of the best moments are things like this when things haven't been going in your favor for a long time and out of the blue, your faith in humanity is restored from a selfless act.

Wow, congrats on the PCA!

I've always said that it only takes one or two bad people to ruin your FFXI experience, but in the same vein it only takes one or two good people like Oddin to make your memory of him/her AND FFXI a great one.

The good people you encounter and adventure with are what makes this game really great, hands down.

Call me a Scrooge but I thought the Peacock Amulet was R/E and therefore could not be sold.

Even if that is the case, it was still nice of that fellow to let you take it.

The 2.3 mil would have been returned when selling the PCC after you get the PCA.

This. The guy already had a PCC, as what he said in the party implied. PCA = PCC, so the guy could have just kept the PCA and sold his PCC, thereby netting 2.3m.

Anyway, I'm glad this is brightening some people's view of FFXI and the people who populate it, certainly did for me^^. Of course, I tried to help some newbie do LB3 tonight and it was the usual nightmare due to him not understanding what "CLICK OFF INVISIBLE!!!!" meant, but so it goes~
