Hello again folks!

While my post for the new people is sinking a bit towards page 2, I still would like to make it a great guide to be stickied by itself, or to be added to the big book of stickies at the top of the page.

lolgaxe wrote:
You forgot the "Which server is best" question.

I actually didn't forget, I don't have a good enough answer. Since people are asking this of our active posting residents of this forum, I'm going to put the question back to you!

But instead of just replies, I have set up surveys in my journal. While I am not looking to find the BEST server, I'm looking to provide as informative a guide as I can to help the new player select a server that suits their needs.

So, I provide to you the polls I have so far created. If you can think of an additional poll, please suggest it here.

Poll 1: What is your current server?
Poll 2: If forced, what server would you move to?
Poll 3: What is your server's main prime time?
Poll 4: What is your time zone?

The last question is more or less to provide a standard of how many posters replying/doing the survey are from which time zones.

I replied, but I'll toss it in here because it is a good point.

MDenham wrote:
To be honest, this one should probably be redone as hours relative to some specific time zone, because (for example) GMT "prime time" and EST "prime time" overlap.

Actually GMT prime time is normally afternoon to early evening EST, where as EST prime time is normally early evening to around 11 pm

I have experience with scheduling events with Europeans in mind, and trust me, GMT =/= EST for most weekday events.

Weekends change everything, and that's why I'm just focusing on the general time. Again, this will not be 100% scientific, it's more a general consensus based on the view of the people being asked the question repeatedly.

Edit:

And technically, JST overlaps a bit with PST, CST overlaps, et cetera. More or less, just looking for general numbers to give people an idea of when servers tend to be busiest. If a lot of people on, say, Ramuh vote for PST/JST, someone from the EST time zone might be prone to jump to one more GMT/EST friendly.

I only chose the server in answer 2 because I have two friends on there and if forced to move I'd want to go be with them.

when you fit your polls in a new thread bout which one is the best server, dont forget the fact that some servers are more active in PvP then other ones (cant exactly remember which one it is ...)
but i think this is a great effort to get a view on server population, i'm on carby and i think its a bit jp heavy and not many europeans at all.
keep up the good work^^

seems like an interesting idea with the polls I voted in each good plan rate ups and hopefully no more "What server!!!!!?!?!?!?!? :D" threads.

P.S. if it does stop the what server questions you should be guru'ed for it

I really really don't mean to sound rude but this won't do anything at all. It's IMPOSSIBLE to say which server is the "best" since that varies by opinion.

A better idea would be to have different quirks that each server might have. For example:

PvP Server
-Fenrir
-Lakshmi (JP time only iirc)

Campaign Server
-XYZ
-ZYX

and so on and so forth.

Maybe even have lists with what server has more people from a certain time zone. What server has more people from X country. So on and so forth.

I just don't like the idea of naming ONE server the "best" since it's such a subjective term. Fenrir is the best for me because it does PvP actively but Bob over there might not give a **** about pvp so it's just an average one to him.

Actually it won't change anything but the answer people give to the question, which will promptly change to "Read the Stickies".

Not that the survey won't harbour any interesting infomation, but we all know how often people seem to glaze over answers in the stickies ^^;

(although if it was its own seperate sticky it might stop one or two of them)

I gave a quick skim over your post and I would highly suggest changing this part.

Quote:
As mentioned before, PvP is not the focus of FFXI. The game is not balanced towards it, and it only features direct player conflict in two forms: Ballista and Brenner. There is no reward for either aside from some gained EXP and gil from open Ballista matches.

I've gone through this countless times and have argued tooth and nail over it. PvP IS balanced. One on one of course it isn't balanced but when you do an official match team vs team instead of diorama e-peen **** fests you'll see that it's not much different in terms of balance when compared to the rest of the game.

Seriously, give it a try.

Here's how one should decide the server they join:

1) Do you want to play FFXI?
-If yes, Go to 2
-If no, go to... wait, why are you reading this?
2) Do you have friends that play?
-If yes, go to 3
-If no, skip to 4
3) Do you know what server they play on?
-If yes, see Resolution 1
-If no, see Resolution 2
4) Do you want to ask someone?
-If yes, go to 5
-If no, see Resolution 3
5) Do you have specific requirements such as population, main language/playtime, etc?
-If yes, see Resolution 4
-If no, see Resolution 3

Resolution 1)
Join the server your friend(s) play on. If you have more than one friend, on more than one server, join the server with more friends, or withthe friends you like more, or flip a coin or something
Resolution 2)
Find out what server(s) they play on, and then read resolution 1
Resolution 3)
Pick the server with the name you like the most, they're all about the same. Don't join Odin or Bismark because they're so over populated that they crash from time to time.
Resolution 4)
If you feel the need to ask an internet forum what server to join out of the 32, you'll get biased answers of join my server or don't join my server. You will also cause us much, MUCH irritation, as we have to constantly answer this question, and the answer is the same. So if you still need to ask, See Resolution 3.
Resolution 5)
Ask us anyway, and then whine and complain when we treat you like **** for asking us this question that we're sick and tired of answering. Choosing Resolution 5 has the following side effects:
Dislike, Mild Hatred, Severe Annoyance, Drama Inciting, Lulz inciting, Failure, Admittance of Idiocy and/or Ignorance, Possible inability to read, Failure to Communicate, Rawr, Flames, Fire, Brimstone, Rage, Impotence, Bridge Collapses, Death of Horses, Beating of dead horses, Odor due to dead horses, Whambulance break downs, Snarky comments, Douchey Comments, Face Eating, Facial Melting, Facial contortion, Respiratory Failure due to laughter, Hyperventilation due to rage, and in severe cases, Banishment from the Internet for all of time.

It's apparent that you have never played WoW...

WoW's character classes are specifically balanced based on both PvE AND PvP play. In the entire life span of this game, no job's abilities have been tweaked with the specific goal of altering their performance in PvP combat, hence when I stated that the game does not balance jobs on that basis.

You have to remember, what you're playing is PvP LIGHT. Trust me, I've played WoW, AoC and CoH/CoV, where there is true open PvP. The difference is night and day.

Also, for those stating that X Y or Z needs to be included, I'll be more than happy to include them. This is also not a "BEST. SERVER. EVER!" contest, this is a "Here's a bunch of facts, choose the server that best applies to you" thread.

What does WoW have to do with anything? Really? Who cares if it's "PvP ligh"t,some of us enjoy it this way. The job classes are fine the way they are and really you're just going to turn people away from an already dying e-sport.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue for or against it, the way you phrased it should be changed though. If anything you could even link my ballista guide to it and let the person judge for themselves whether they want to join a ballista server or not.

Well...

The paragraph you quoted was under the heading for those coming from other MMOs, specifically WoW, AoC, et cetera... So, kind of a lot to do with that wording. And I have no plans on changing the wording... because FFXI is not a conflict-oriented game.

That section is not about the PvP as it exists at all. It's about what people from other games can expect of this game. In general, the point is "If you get your jollies ganking people, this game is NOT for you. This game is a COMMUNITY game, even it's PvP is communal. Even if you have every powerful shiny in the game, you will not be running around smiting people and teabagging/spitting on them. You've been warned!"

By all means, if you want to write up something to encourage new players who have no idea what this game is about to join Ballista, be my guest. This thread, to get back on topic, is about selecting a server based on critera new players can more easily understand (i.e. where can I get help, where would people move to, what communites are most active, et cetera). It's informal, not 100% scientific, and will be supplimented by comments similar to Jinte's "play where your friends are" and my poor attempt at showcasing FFXIAH.com's ability to give you an working knowledge of economics for jobs.

In other words, Ballista, as much as you love it, probably will not be the reason someone jumps into FFXI. And if it is, it would be up to someone far more versed in it to create a thread dedicated to recruiting and training the next Ballista stars.

I already did write something up to encourage people to ballista which is why I think you should put it in there so that they get an idea of what ffxi pvp is from someone who actually does pvp.

Although PvP will not be the deciding factor in moving or not, and I DO agree with this, it does not hurt to put it out there that there IS a ballista community albeit a small one. I really don't see the harm in linking to my ballista guide in there other than the fact that your guide is linking to another persons guide which I suppose could hurt ones ego...

Anyway, good luck with your project.

It's a well known (fact) that any thread which asks which server is the best should always be answered with "Siren".

This rule should be sticky'ed.

I'd be tempted to move to another server if I didn't have an awesome social Smiley: lol

Oh, I don't know.

And me too. Plus I think the handful of close friends I have that followed together on my move from Siren -> Carbuncle a year ago would probably be pissed at me. Then again, if at some point I'm still not able to find a late night (yeah, 9:30 EST+ isn't really "late") Dynamis shell and Salvage group, other servers maybe the only option.
