New Player(ish) Looking To Get the FFXI ExperienceFollow

#1 Jan 01 2016 at 3:26 PM Rating: Decent
Hi,

Firstly, happy new year! Following an insane year with a number of tragedies, dramas and outright bad situations that I ought not to discuss - I have come into 2016 with lists. There are lists of things I wish to do before I die, places I want to see but there are also lists of games, movies and books I wish to experience. Final Fantasy XI is on this list, the main reason for that is that I have played every main series numbered FF title to completion except V, XI and XIV (I am working on V) but it is also because I spent a lot of time reading about FFXI in its early years but never played for more than a couple of evenings. I would like to rectify this, I would like to experience the core story/gameplay of FFXI including the social experience that comes with it - it is a goal of mine (albeit a weird one I admit) but before I can do so, I was hoping the ZAM community could help me clarify a couple of points?

1. What is the current state of the game? Is there anything I should be aware of going in?
2. What is the best server for an EU player (based in the UK) to start a new character on?
3. What is the best way to find an active and supportive Linkshell that can help me get through the game's obscurities along the way (I remember it having some)?

Basically, it's mostly only the die-hards that are still playing. This means it's going to be very top-heavy and that other than town hubs and such you're not likely to run into a whole lot of other people until you get to the higher level hangouts.

If you're looking to find a community of a scope more like what FFXI was like in its prime, too bad. You won't find it anymore; that ship has sailed.

Couldn't say, there's no region limitations/suggestions for servers in this game, so any sort of gravitation there might be to one server over the others is purely an unofficial one.

There is a "linkshell concierge" system in the game now that can be used to locate linkshells recruiting for specific goals, but I don't know how often it's used. It's one of the numerous "this could have been great to have... years ago" features they implemented way too late.

Other than that, you pretty much just have the /yell command, although you have to make it to Jeuno before you can use it.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm not expecting to experience the game as it was in its prime, clearly we're more than a decade through and that's come and gone - what I would ask instead is what is the community that remains like? Is it hostile or juvenile like some MMO's? Is it welcoming to newcomers and visitors who haven't been there the whole time? Is it possible for someone inexperienced to come into the game and have a good time still?

If you keep to yourself, you probably won't find trouble. Nonetheless, XI is wrought with the usual elitism you'll find in other MMOs, usually their raid scene, but in this case more just general optimum party set ups, gear for abilities, and all that. Pragmatically, if you're looking to explore the majority of the world and see most of the stories, you can avoid this entirely. Later Adoulin and Rhapsody missions will probably require another body or two, though, even with Trusts. That's usually more a result of the required gear curve and Trusts inherently being weaker than players even if sometimes their AI seems convenient or more reliable. Unfortunately, gearing up while leveling may seem difficult at points since low level AHable items won't be sold too often.

If you are looking to play in the evenings (UK time) I am usually around at those times, so are others in my LS - however if you are looking to play during the daytime then we won't be around. However you would be welcomed and given any help you need wether it a question answered or actual physical help. I reside on the cerberus server. And most of the obscurities you mention have for the most part been vanquished.

I'd maybe suggest looking up the FFXI reddit, they have a linkshell on Asura and seem to be fairly active and aimed towards new / returning players.

I just moved to Asura. It's nice to see people running around again.

I've purchased FFXI two days ago for some of the same reasons (minus the tragedies)! I was a little worried about not being able to find an active community at first but looking over this forum eased my concern a little.
