Thinking about trying this gameFollow

I've played Final Fantasy XIV, but never got into XI. I was thinking about giving it a try for the novelty, even if I don't really expect to get into it much.

Some questions:

1. A lot of people have mentioned that this game is virtually "dead" right now. Would you say this is true? Is it impossible to find groups outside of endgame guilds now?
2. Do you still lose experience and even levels as a death penalty today?
3. Does XI have the dungeon finder tool that XIV has? If not, do you think one will be added in the near future?
4. Do you pretty much have to beat the storylines of all of the expansions to get enough experience to reach level 99?
5. How exactly does combat work? I've read it's turn based yet positioning can be important. Is it kind of like Sacred Seasons where you get turns based on speed and have to decide on a move quickly as the monster does not wait to use its turn?

1. It's dead in the sense due to XIV being new, most are on that game and with it being the generic MMO of the times, it's a much different design than when XI came out in 2001/2002. So some servers it is dead as SE is making more and more adjustments to allow for solo/low man play which killed off a lot of linkshells.

2. Yep after a certain level but you gain exp so fast in this game now it's hard to ever get to the point unless you try.

3. Nope, XI doesn't have "dungeons" in that sense, they have other content that takes entry items, e.g Beastmen Seals or require story access to do, for example Chains of Promathai missions.

4. Nope, but you do in order to get you to certain content. Exp comes from monster killing or records of eminence objectives. This is a much different game than XIV.

5. It's turn based, positioning is important only in certain encounters, for example some enemies, notably the Black Dragons from content like Amdapor Keep or Labyrinth of the Ancients that originated here has more attack power if you attack them from the back since they'll attack you with their hind legs instead of their mouth/arms. (Not the Tail Swipe mechanic, actually attacking with the back legs.) But that's an early game example, end-game is quite different.

Speed does play a key but it's more like basic FF games: More haste you have more you get to attack, your auto attacks matter much much more in this game than it does in ARR.

So it's possible to find groups but chances are you'll be grouping with your NPC companions eventually until some end-game but XI is over 12 years old now, so it's pretty aged.

A couple more questions:

For spell names, most FFs use either the numbering system or the suffix -ga to denote spell power, yet FFXI uses both. So what is the difference between Fire III and Firega?

In terms of time needed, is 1-99 in XI faster or slower than 1-50 in XIV?

-aga spells in XI are AOE spells.

So Fire II is a single target, and Firaga II is an AOE. Sleep II is single target, Sleepga II is AOE. Tier indicates the relative strength within the type of spell, so Blizzard V is quite a bit more powerful than Blizzaga III unless the latter hits a LOT of targets. We don't use the -ga spells as our primary damage spells because they generate a lot of enmity.

1-99 in XI can go fast or slow depending on how much you want to derp around with the storyline. Starting at 50 in XI though you absolutely have to complete quests to advance past a level cap, although you only have to do the quest once per character (so subsequent jobs to 99 can fly right by.) XIV doesn't have that hard requirement (you can fate grind to 50 and ignore all the quests, although you'll be stuck locally unless you get to the 15 quests at least.)

So I will say that your first 99 in XI will take a bit more time than your first 50 in XIV. You also have to get your subjobs (XI's equivalent to cross class) to 49, unlike XIV where you can get most to 15-20 and call it done.

I've rarely had any luck with FATE grinding myself (some FATEs are unsoloable, others I arrive at too late to get any real XP from), so my main source of experience has been Main Scenario and Levequests, with some Duty Roulette thrown in for variety.

In fact, the reason is that they cost a lot of mp. Aoe spells are stronger than the single target counterparts. They aren't often used against single targets simply because they cost much more mp, making them very inefficient. A black mage would typically prefer to use aoe spells during manafont, since mp isn't an issue. You can't compare tiers of different spells. Blizzaga 3 will do more damage than blizzard 4.

If you want to talk about MP efficiency, Stone I wins these days. Smiley: laugh

I don't think it's dead, although the server pops are at their lowest point ever, if we were honest. There are always people on, and always shouts still. I'm always running into people in random, outlying zones that you'd think no one else would be in.

2. Do you still lose experience and even levels as a death penalty today?
Yep, but the penalty is much less steep than in the past. At cap, the most you typically lose for eating a death is 5% if my math's right. It's not really an issue though, as you can gain the exp back in literally two minutes.

3. Does XI have the dungeon finder tool that XIV has? If not, do you think one will be added in the near future?
As someone else stated, they'll never add dungeon finder to XI, there's no need since no real dungeons. Shouts and linkshells are your grouping tools!

4. Do you pretty much have to beat the storylines of all of the expansions to get enough experience to reach level 99?
You don't have to, but it certainly helps for unlocking areas to EXP in. Even if you're just starting out, getting your Abyssea stones started at level 30 will help for those times when you just want to sit back and open chests instead of grinding solo. To restate, the storylines themselves don't grant the experience, but merely gate certain content, unlike XIV, which does both. 99% of the EXP in game is garnered through combat/combat objectives, specific battle instances (such as besieged, campaign, etc.) or the newer Records of Eminence objectives.
