FFXI doesn't boot, pol crashes to pol.Follow

After clicking play, and dismissing the maintenance announcement, the Playonline viewer flickers as though it's about to boot the game, crashes back to the pol user area, and then completely crashes with the message "pol.exe has encountered an error(...)".

How do I fix this? I've done a file check on the viewer and FFXI, and both checks came up clean.

If reinstalling and updating was a fast process, I'd do it. 53 hours The next full moon is an awfully long time to wait.

I had this issue today, but I logged out and logged back in and it seemed to get fixed. Maybe it is just having hiccups today?

Assuming you're using the proper POL version for your OS?

Yes, I'm using the correct launcher. I'm not using the vista or 7 one with XP.

It consistently didn't work yesterday, no matter how many times I tried to get it. I'll check if it works now.

Still nothing. The viewer closes as though it's about to boot FFXI, the lighting changes, it then reverts to the original lighting, pol reappears, and then it crashes.

Have you done any vid card driver updates? Play with Windower, official and not? I suppose a possible generic Windows update could do funky things, too.

Nope. While I don't admit to using Windower, if I did, I'd be able to tell you that it works fine, besides suffering from the playonline viewer crashing after I try to boot ffxi, same as without Windower.

I've had Windows updates disabled for a while now.

I normally have the Windows Installer service disabled, but if I turn it on, when I run a filecheck on pol, a windows installer box appears, and prompts me to find the pol and tetra master installer. The filecheck finds no problems, otherwise.

I'll redownload the trial to get ahold of the pol installer, and see what happens.

Well, it made me an additional, unpatched pol, but this one is in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ffxi\SquareEnix, instead of C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FFXIPAL\SquareEnix.

Ugh, you're playing through Steam. I'll be blunt, people have had a lot of issues playing through that in the past. However they fixed their issues, if ever, I fear I couldn't tell you.

I installed the Seekers collection from steam, but I don't use Steam to launch it. That probably doesn't change the fact that the Steam version is prone to breaking.

It works now. I renamed the FFXI folder, uninstalled pol, reinstalled it twice (I copied over the old install the first time, which kept the broken files or something, so I deleted most of them and reinstalled a second time).

Check files takes ages. I spend more time checking files than playing.
