New custom build video card issues...Follow

#1 Aug 14 2013 at 10:01 AM Rating: Decent
Hello, everyone. Alright, so I just finished building a custom computer and I'm having problems with my video card. It seems to be working fine (fan spins, displays picture), but whenever windows boots there are these weird red lines on the display and the system prompts me to start in Safe Mode. If I choose to start in Normal mode the screen just goes black other than the mouse cursor popping up. I'm not sure if it is the drivers, BIOS settings or what. I have tried using the on-board graphics to go in and pre-install the drivers before installing the video card, but that did not help. Also tried resetting the card itself and the ram, still no help. Here's my system specs:

Asrock Z77 Pro3
intel core i5-3570
Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7750
Corsair Vengeance 8Gb DDR3
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Any help would be appreciated!

Without being able to put my paws on it, I'd say bad out of the box video card and/or motherboard. Upwards of 10% of components are dead on arrival (usually due to damage in shipping.)

Test 1: Completely remove the video card and go to on board video. Does it work? If so, it's either the card or the graphics slot. If i doesn't, it's a bad motherboard.
Test 2: If you can find one, try a different video card in the slot. If a different card works, you got a bad card. If a different video card does not work either, you've got a bad motherboard. Return the offending component for a replacement.

Thanks for the info. The on-board graphics are working fine. I'm using it to type this. I don't have access to another video card at the moment, but I'll see what I can do.

A common mistake when building a custom computer (especially with first timers) is metal-to-metal assembly.

Make sure when you screwed down the motherboard that you used the proper spacers and didn't just ***** it directly to the case's brackets. It may be an embarrassing thing to have happen, but symptoms like you describe often happen from a gfx card frying when things are assembled this way. If the on-board is working fine though, I'd second the vote for a DOA gfx card.

Also, make sure it's seated properly (pushed in flush and flat) and has proper power, assuming it's a gfx card that requires secondary power).

If you get a replacement card and it's still doing it, you may have a bad card-slot as well - it's rare but it happens.

Yeah, I used the offsetting screws that came with the mobo so that shouldn't have been an issue. I will try reinstalling the card later today and see what happens. I'm thinking maybe I'm using the wrong drivers or something, but I installed the ones from the disc that came with the vid card. I even tried using an updated driver from the Sapphire support site, but it had no effect. Maybe it is just a bad card, though...

Win7 is much better than XP was about being able to get a rudimentary graphic's card driver up and running on install. Now, XP would often require a lot of jerry-rigging and divine intervention to get unknown devices to play along prior to the first crack at Internet access for updates, but Win7? It tends to take a look at what you've built, identify all its bits, and go "Oh, okay, I can work with this."

So I'm actually inclined to rule out a driver problem, although anything is possible.

wierd red lines on the display are almost always graphical artfacts caused by a failed or failing video card. There are apperently a crapload of dead out of the box Saphire 7750's You'll want to RMA it. More info here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/392951-33-radeon-7750-displaying

One possible cause can also be undervolting if it's not a bad card. make sure your power supply meets minimum specifications
