First and foremost, find a linkshell (kinda like a guild in other MMOs). I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before a handful of people come by and mention that they have a linkshell for new players.

Also, previous experience with Final Fantasy games won't mean much here. As an MMO, FFXI is an entirely different animal. You'll see a lot of common elements (chocobos, Moogles, and Cid, to name a few), but that's about it.

Honestly, I've never had good luck with people new to ffxi. Its not very user friendly. A lot of ppl get so frustrated within the first 24hours of it. Everything past that point they view in the most negative light. Don't pick it up on a Friday night thinking you'll get to play all weekend. You'll spend an hour trying to figure out how to set up an account. Then download & Install the game from a digital collectors edition. When you finally login you'll think you're home free until you find out you have 10 more hours of updating before you can play.

If you pick up a quest the only hint to where to go might be a zone name. Quest rewards never give exp and the gil rewards are often so small selling the item the quest asked for on the auction house is more profitable. The only quests worth doing are those that give spells or unlock advanced jobs.

I'm sorry If I'm coming off a little harsh. Its just better to know what you're getting into. FFXI is an 11 year old game. It hasn't evolved like other MMO's. Leveling is much faster now but early game is very harsh to new players.

As Ralrra said if you can find a linkshell before you join a server you'll be better off. Having other people to chat with can really make or break this game.

It can be quite tough to start. i do remember starting myself though. speak to most of the npcs you talk to, get a few quests up and start hitting things outside towns. Shout for a ls as well. you might not have much luck until you get to the center hub of the world, Jeuno.

It seems to me the biggest hurtle for new players is usually the control scheme. Keep in mind the game was designed with the console controller in mind as the primary control interface. If you've got a USB controller I highly recommend trying to play with that (or picking up a cheap one) when you start.

Also, the game has 2 config areas, one in-game and one outside of game. Use the config app before launching the game to set your resolution and controller set up before you start.

One last thing, as a new player, the sign up process isn't exactly intuitive. You need to create both a playonline account as well as a square enix account. If you run into trouble just post back here and we'll be able to help.

Oh! Also don't be surprised if the starter areas are ghost towns. The game is very top-heavy and most players are busy with the new expansion zones. Once you get to those areas you'll be longing for less crowded zones.

Wouldn't happen to be MultiScoregasms, would it? I was going to mention that, but didn't feel like advertising a LS I'm not in.
