Tips for skilling up great sword?Follow

#1 Apr 27 2013 at 8:04 AM Rating: Decent
So i cam back a month or so ago after a 2 year break and leveled RUN. But while leveling is much faster skilling is just as slow and gets left behind and its getting painfully boring.

Currently at 302 fighting duriumshells useing skill food (elshena) and im getting hardly anything. Im killing these rather slow and getting a skill up maybe every 3 fights if i am lucky.

capped mine mostly in Abby-Grauberg--without using food.. Crabs there are pretty easy to manage. Might be a bit slow going at 302, but once it gets a little higher it should take off fairly steady. Once yo uget closer to 95-99, might want to switcg to something a bit meaner though. Camels in Abby-Altep work nicely if people are running them enough to keep them EM+ at 99.

I am going to make a list of things that can make skilling GS much faster. Obviously they are just suggestions and some of them might not be feasible for you, but doing any of these will decrease the time you need to cap GS.

1) Use skill up food as you mentioned. (Elshena caps at 320, you might find you have better luck using Montagna)
2) Prouesse Ring and Terminus Earring (getting either or both of these might be more of a time sink than actually skilling up, but you can always try skilling up in Zeruhn mines to get the ring out of the brown caskets).
3) If at all possible, skill it using WAR and pop retaliation and defender. Skill ups are largely about the number of swings you take per amount of time. I skill everything on WAR because retaliation can get skill ups and every time the mob hits you, you have a free shot at a skill up. And fighting 2 mobs at much means 2x the chances etc. Retaliation = free swings that aren't on a delay timer.
4) "Rent" a Mercurial Greatsword. Expensive to buy but you can always resell in a few days for minimal to no gil loss.
5) Skill up in Abyssea on DC mobs using Regen/Defense Atmas. It's been awhile since I did this so I forget the specific names, but they can be looked up pretty easily on a wiki. #5 also makes #3 more potent because you can fight several mobs at once which increases retaliation. You basically become a skill up mill. Sometimes you attack faster than the animations can keep up with which is amazing considering it's a 2H weapon.

This type of approach allowed me to skill GS (and other weapons as well) very quickly. Maybe none of these is viable for you, but if any are, each one will shorten the time it takes to skill up considerably. If you expect to be skilling up multiple weapons at any point in time, you should consider trying to make these viable.

If you can 'rent' an M. Sword then you can probably afford a half-decent -PDT set. Grab one (plus a few r/ex pieces if you want to put the time in) and round up some linkable Abyssea mobs, line them up against a wall and pop Retaliator/Defender. Have as many regen Atma on as you can and then AFK for skills if your HP is stable, or go /DNC for cures and don't AFK. Since, as someone else rightly said, skilling is about how many hits you can get in a certain time, this is by far the most efficient way to go about it.

Edit: Just noticed this exact same thing in the post above -.- Herp derp!

Then sadly you are stuck just fighting DCs then. If you have apoc atma or another triple attack atma is about the only thing that will speed it up for you.

The lowest delay great sword Ferrara can be gotten solo now if you can be assed going through ZNM's, drops from 2nd tier marid so can go quite quickly if you have a thf.
