So I'm planning to start playing again soon, and have noticed people saying "when you proc" in reference to abyssea and other stuff. And I find it confusing lol.

I remember it was used in reference to traits like double attacks and status effects on weapons back when I used to play. So whats this new proccing about?

All the NMs in Abyssea and Voidwatch use what we call the "proc" system.

Each NM has a set of weaknesses corresponding to weaponskills, spells, and sometimes abilities.

To "proc" an NM is to use the corresponding ability on that NM.
The set of abilities that will weaken the mob are random (though the set size can be limited). A giant ! appears when a weakness is hit.
Here is an article discussing Abyssea specifically- http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Weakness_Targeting

Also, proc more generally stands for Programmed Random Occurrence and is used often for when a specific event occurs (like having double attack kick in).

EDIT: The system is also used dynamis and maybe other places, but I don't think it will be used in Adoulin areas (they will have different elements).

Nah, just more of a case of doing several things at once. Either my hands moved on their own after punching the w or I had intended to say one thing then changed my mind.

In any case, I simply wasn't paying attention and have made adjustments. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

No single source has been definitively credited with the term "proc", but here are the candidates:

1) Programmed Random OCcurrence - This is a favorite explanation of "proc" amongst programmers. This alleged origin describes the randomness of a proc, and how it is not a guaranteed event.

2) PROCess - Most laypeople believe this to be the source of the expression "proc", but software programmers prefer the explanation above.

3) PROCedure - Coming from the world of Pascal programming, there were text-based games where gamer commands would be typed like "proc meleestrike wraith"

4) special PROCedure - An event triggered under particular circumstances

Proc's in FFXI sound a lot like #1 or 4 depending on what you do.

Aside from weakening mobs, the main uses of procs are to increase drops, improve the chance of getting KIs, and, in voidwatch, to get new temporary items.

I always figured "proc" was short for procure.

I'm still the few who actually call it stagger/staggering after the system's actual name :\

I am amazed how so few people actually seem to know this.

To 'proc' means to 'procure'.

'Procure' is a synonym

obtain - get - acquire - gain - secure - purchase

So to 'proc' is to get, obtain or acquire.

See, the problem is you're referring to proc as a verb, and everyone else is using it in the sense of a noun.

"We've got red proc" "We've got grellow proc" "We've got blue proc"

Procure doesn't fit because one isn't talking about an action, they're talking about an effect. Programmed Random OCcurrence is actually the correct referrence and was coined in video game terms back in the MUD days.

You also seem to be devoted entirely to going against everything that everyone else says/does simply because that's you.

Considering the system itself is called "Stagger" I simply call things what SE calls it. Just like when an add effect goes off I say the defense down proc'd or the death effect on my twilight scythe proc'd.
