Newbie needing advice to make gilFollow

#1 Apr 14 2013 at 2:18 PM Rating: Decent
I have searched through the wiki and through Alakazaam for ways for newbies to make some gil, but I don't feel like I'm doing this well. I'm having an extremely hard time keeping up with gear for how fast I level because I never have enough gil to progress. Is there any links/advice anyone can provide with useful info? Or am I pretty much restricted to farming small stuff and selling it on the AH?

I am a level 19 BLM, trying to gear up before I do the subjob quest.

Thank you in advanced

Right now is just about the best time ever to farm crystals. Honestly, check the AH and the prices for them.

First, it sounds like you don't have a helpful linkshell.
This should be the first thing you do. They will help you out with quests like the subjob one.
You can find a linkshell either by shouting on your server or giving us your information and someone on this forum might be able to help out.

As far as making gil, the game has recently undergone huge adjustments, but there's the short of what we recommend-
1. It's suggested you level WAR or MNK first, but BLM works too. This mostly comes down to spell costs since they become relatively high eventually.

2. Don't place too much focus on gear, spells are much more important for BLM. For melee, you want a good weapon, but again, gear doesn't require so much focus. This is due to what you pointed out- leveling is ridiculously fast. I won't bore you with the reasons for this, but large groups will place little to no importance on your gear.

3. Unfortunately, you're pretty much stuck farming small stuff until lv95+. Crystals and beechips are some good items. There are also some low level items you can craft that will be useful like ingots. You won't be making 100,000+ gil unless you dedicate some serious time to it.

Thank you for your prompt response. I appreciate the advice you have given me. The only reason I'm leveling BLM is as a sub for RDM, as with the research I have done that is one of the expected subs for that class for high level partys.

I will focus on weapons and spells! Is it possible for me to use the beast seals on the level 20 setting to get some scrolls that way? Or does that require I get into a linkshell and organize some play?

There are some lv20 fights using the seals, but generally, the lv40 fights are the most profitable.

Most of these are not soloable and require 3-6 players.
The ones that can be done solo require experience and research, so it's not an easy task.

The only issue with this option is that the better geared you are, the better your success rate. Scaled gear really doesn't cut it for these fights as well as being properly equipped for the level. So it just means buying more gear on the chance of making money.

Your best bets are normally just to follow the updates SE puts out and try to hop on any bandwagon trend before too many do. It's the only "secret" there is.

First thing is ALWAYS have signet on when you fight mobs. Without signet you won't get any crystal drops. Crystals are key.

Then next question is whether to just sell your crystals (in stacks of 12) or to craft with them. Yes, crafting can be very lucrative - if you do it right.

Instead of selling all your fire crystals, check your Auction House for how the supply of copper ingots looks. How many stacks sell in a day? (You'll find copper ingots under Materials -> Smithing; click on one entry and then sort - you'll find in alphabet order after that.) Go to San d'Oria, buy copper ore from the Smithing Guilding - make a stack of copper ingots, put them on the AH for 999 gil less than the previous sale (minus one thousand, plus one). Just realize that putting up more stacks than sell, won't make them sell. Don't flood your markets. To make a copper ingot "use" a fire crystal, that will open a grid that you can place 4 copper ore into, and then click OK. You'll see an animation of you crafting, followed by either a pop showing the synth was successful, or a break, where you lose the crystal and possibly some of your ingredients. Don't fret breaks, they happen. All the synths I'm giving you are in the range of beginners.

Instead of selling all your dark crystals, check your AH for how the supply of sheep leather looks. (Sheep leather can be found Materials -> leathercraft.) How many stacks sell in a day? Since you're in San d'Oria, go to the leather (Tanner's) guild and buy sheepskins and distilled water. See if you can buy a stack of windust tea leaves on the AH. The synth is "use" dark crystal, place sheepskin + windurst tea leaf + distilled water; you'll get the animation and pop a sheep leather is synthesized.

You can also craft all the ingredients for stone arrows. See how many stacks of stone arrows sell per day. Buy the arrowwood lumber from the Woodcrafter's Guild; make stone arrowheads by using a wind crystal and 2 flint stones. You'll also need chocobo fletching, which you can craft with wind crystal and 2 chocobo feathers which can be purchased from an NPC near the chocobo stable in Southern San d'Oria. Since you can obviously craft chocobo fletchings, you can also craft a stack of those and place them on the AH.

Between selling your crystals and these 3 beginner synths, you should be able to get all the gil you need.

Im not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, 2 key ways to make the most money as a newb (at least on phoenix server) :

Sell fire crystals by themselves, you can get 1000gil apiece super fast, I clear 7 out in a matter of hours
AND
Use 2000 cp points to buy voiddust from the voidwatch people in town and those sell for 10,000 gil in a matter of hours.. I had thousands of points adding up and made a ton of money this way.

open brown treasure caskets if you're soloing. Sometimes there are things in them that can sell for thousands and thousands of gil. I made 40K from a drop I got in maze of shakrami (I also made half a million on a drop from a higher level - and admittedly more annoying zone). Other times there are things you can npc for a decent amount.

Also, fishing for moat carp can be profitable. They usually sell pretty quickly for a decent amount. You can fish them in the starter cities and the knightswell outside of sandy.

Surprised no one mentioned, but it's not uncommon for new players to remain without sub jobs until lv ~25 or so. With the popularity of Gusgen GoV parties, these levels will fly by, and they also target mobs that drop the Magiked Skull item you need. No one will care if you lot it.

The other two mobs that drop the items can be solo'd reasonable well around lv 25 by most jobs. But Valkurm Dunes is still somewhat well traveled these days, and it wouldn't surprise me if you could just stand in the zone and shout for help. Just remember to be polite and don't spam the shout channel too often.

I thought you had to be level 30 to get a subjob? Man I am still a newb even though I have played on and off for years... this is the first time I can actually get anywhere with the perks they gave newbies. I am level 20, if I could start a sub job that would be rad...

It's okay, that happens. You can get the subjob at 18. Make sure you are looking up your spells and questing the ones you can get that way. For example, blaze spikes comes from an awesome windurst quest line, starting here: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Truth,_Justice,_and_the_Onion_Way!

Drain comes from a Sandorian quest: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Rumor (you will need to be rank 3 or Sandorian with some fame to enter the zone for this quest)

Warp come from this bastokian quest: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Mean_Machine

Doing these quests is much cheaper than buying these scrolls from the auction house, and these are great spells.

One way you can get rich that no one mentioned is make a muleor second account. Their are many spells that are quested. You can do them on your main account and learn then. On your mule do the quest and sell the scrolls. Most scrolls are 300 to 1m each. A few spells like drain. Tele retrace warp all sell for great money. Other spels drop in bcnm 40 phalinx and ninja shadow spell. Both 1m each.

Level 30 is another key level though. That is what you need to be able to start the quests for unlocking the advanced jobs.
