I have a terrible terrible addiction to this game. Seriously. The thought of being locked out of it against my will for a month is crushing my soul. All the grinding. All the side grades. The 600 times I've been stiffed by Akvan.... none of it matters.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

I have officially decided to buy an xbox even though I don't want one, just to play this frigging game. I did consider trucking my MONSTER COMPUTER over to my hotel room where I will be trapped for the next month, but the thought of trying to carry it made me cry.

If you're willing to spend the money on an Xbox, you might consider just buying a similarly-priced laptop and playing on that.

I played FFXI for nearly a year on a little Dell Latitude (with a USB numpad) without a problem.

I don't need another computer. I have a tablet, a monster computer, and my work is supplying me with a macbook while I am away. I'd rather own an xbox than a computer I'd rarely use. Also, I nosed around and I couldn't see anything that cost less than an xbox that would give me better performance. (I have 1 day to buy a device and load it up with XI on a real connection - no time to wait for newegg or tiger direct/whatever)

At the very least I could pick up some used games that I've refused to buy on PC because I don't want to use origin (Dragon Age for example) or that are only on console (can't think of any but I know they exist supposedly).

It won't be "my" laptop so I am going to leave as is. Also, that would necessitate waiting till I get to the location to load up XI and I won't have a lot of time to deal with it. Basically, I just want the ability to craft/fish/quest/farm myself to sleep. Going to have to have a strict "no group play" (though exp could be ok since that is drop in/out) rule to ensure I don't stay up all night and ***** myself over since I am on a 7 day a week 12+ hour a day schedule.

Maybe I can work on my lu shangs... ha ha ha ha /slits wrists

Why don't you just load your entire home xxxdower config on dropbox and play it via the mac? Not allowed?

My employers would not approve of me installing an mmo on the laptop. Besides. The xbox is now sitting at home updating. Can't stop me now!

Attempting to install on an external or using remote desktop would have been my first solution.

At least this way you'll have access to a wider selection of games in case FFXI doesn't seem appealing.

I have a 3DS and a PSP with 30+ games between them, and I picked up dragon age, FF 13, and Kingdoms of Amalur for 10 bucks each to bring with. I should be okay.

If you were willing to buy an xbox, you are really addicted. A cheap laptop would have been better off regardless of the number of computers you have. That's even more true if you only bought it to play ffxi.

I am really addicted and I did look but I didn't see a $275 laptop that was anything I wanted to actually own. I simply don't have enough desire for a laptop to buy some flimsy PoS. I'll definitely get more use out of the xbox than I would out of a cheapo laptop.

And there were some games I wanted to try (Final Fantasy 13, for example, which people hate, but I want to know for myself) that I needed either an xbox or a ps3 to play. And, as mentioned, I've been wanting to try Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon Age but didn't want to have origin on my computer.

XI was merely the tipping point, not the sole reason. If I either didn't care about being able to play XI, or if it was available on both xbox and PS3 I would have gone with the latter because it has exclusives that look more interesting to me. Alas, being able to play my mmo on the go was what I needed to get me to plunk down the cash.

This is truth. My best friend came back to FFXI after a four year break because I told him they were adding Geomancer.

That's great. So many changes made in the last four years, I hope he enjoys it.

PS: the game looks worse on xbox than I had dreamed possible, but I still have no regrets.

:)
