I got bored and saw FF11 on steam and decided to buy it because I've never played it. I'm currently level 15 with the Warrior job and things so far are going pretty smoothly.
The only thing that is bugging me, how the hell do I get better weapons and armor? Do I have to grind the crafts forever similar to FF14? I tried looking at the auction house but I only have a petty 2k gil. I'm still using the bronze sword and shell shield I got pretty early and they just aren't doing enough damage to keep going further and killing harder monsters. Any help here would be appreciated, and for what it's worth I'm on the Phoenix server.

Be sure to get signet from gate guards in your home town. Killing exp mobs with signet gives a chance to drop crystals, which will be a decent money maker to start out with. You should also spend time farming items to sell on the AH.
For starter gear, you should look up which NPCs sell the items you're looking for

Join the gusgen mines alliance or solo easy monsters using fields of valour pages (books that give "training regimes" of killing certain prey) - once every game day those pages give a gil reward
And make sure to have signet and sell your crystals on the AH.
Other things that make money at low levels are wild onions, beehive chips, honey, and silk thread
Mostly I'd just buy a club or go barefisted and join the gusgen mines alliance - it will get you crystals and gil rewards, and you will level up without needing new gear.
Also you can buy gear using conquest points (you get them from killing monsters while wearing signet)- talk to the gate guards. Make sure to do the noob intro quest that your moogle is nagging you about. That introduces you to some basic mechanics.

Target mobs that drop fire crystals; take those crystals to the Smithing or Goldsmithing shops; buy 4 copper ore and profit. Copper ingots can be synthed by complete novices - and no NPC sells them. They are crafted only. Plus, the HQ is the same as NQ - so higher levels get no advantage.
