External HDD PeeveFollow

#1 Jan 29 2013 at 6:46 AM Rating: Default
If something is already installed on a External HDD.. it shouldn't have to rely on registrys and permissions or whatever wacky system is has when moving from your original Computer to a laptop to play.

When I had Guild Wars installed, I could move that External HDD to different computer or laptop no problem, as long as it installed correctly on my External HDD.

FFXI Online.. on the other hand, wants you to watch paint dry for 10 more hours as it installs again for the 2nd time in a 2nd, different location.

If you already have it installed on your HDD what you can do is move that PoL folder some places else. Just cut and paste it in a folder somewhere. Then install Playonline & FFXI on to the HDD in the exact same location you don't have to do the 15 hours of updates all you're doing is setting the registery up. Then Copy & paste the Fully updated playonline folder back to where it should be and replace all the outdated files you just installed.

Translation: I want to install FFXI on my desktop & laptop to run off the same install on my External HDD. How do I do this?

Yes. Thank you, im so tired from tinkering with this all night and trying different stuff, and have failed over and over so far.

Now im left with re-installing fresh and new. Im already really dreading the extremely, super slow process of updating the game

So while im doing a fresh install on my External HDD (With my Desktop PC) of both Playonline, and FFXI, and the dreadfully slow updating process, will i be able to use this install to play on my Laptop without changing anything?

EDIT: Just read your Edit. Im afraid its too late for that. Its already forcing my to un-install my FFXI Online folder to install a new one. Im not sure if its because I have Vista 32 bit, but whenever I move my Play Online folder, it will tell me some message and wont let me use it. Im really hoping with a fresh new install of both FFXI Online and Playonline on my HDD without moving or tampering with anything, I can move the External HDD afterwords to my Laptop and just open it up and play

Sounds like permission issues, especially if you are talking about Vista.

It sounds to me like you might not understand enough about your system to be doing something like this. My advice is next time, open a thread asking for help with moving your game to another hard drive. I can think of at least ten forum regulars off the top of my head that could have (and would have) posted instructions to help you that would have saved you time and frustration. Asking for help isn't the end of the world.

XI was built for Windows XP, and on WinXP it was quite difficult to have a program installed on one system's hard drive run without issues on another system's hard drives. The registry for Windows is pretty complex, after all. Guild Wars is a much newer game and I wouldn't be surprised if it was programmed by folks who knew how to get the registry to behave better. (I mean, XI is really just a PS2 port running on an emulator in Windows...)

XI really won't like running that way if you have two different operating systems installed on those systems. Like, you installed it on a 32-bit XP system, but you're trying to run it from the external HDD on a 64 bit Windows 7 system.. That is definitely going to cause problems in the short term.

WoW works the same way. Can run that off an external, or move the WoW folder anywhere and it runs, so the age of the game isn't really all that relevant. It definitely the porting issue.

I've had this for a while. Just throw it in your "X:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer" folder (not FFXI's).

It's configured for 64bit Win7/Vista, NA POL only. You could change NA to EU I think and perhaps even change the foldering to the non-64bit registry locations in regfix.reg if you needed to.

More importantly, edit regfix.reg (right click, open with, use notepad) and change the first couple things, under InstallFolder if you can figure out what that means Smiley: tongue, to the locations of POL and FFXI on your external drive (specifically the drive letter, which isn't likely to be C:)

You can tell how long I've been using this because it still has TetraMaster entries XD

Then, run regfix.reg and then reinstall.bat to set default registry entries and register dlls and you should be all set. You'll have to do this once per system change and perhaps redo the InstallFolder part if it gives your external a different letter now and then.

@ Catwho

Well they are both Windows Vista 32 bit, not sure if they are different editions, can get back to everyone on that

@ Raelix

I think ill def. ***** something up with that whole set of things to do.
I would love to try it sure, but any failure would probably result in me having
to install everything again resulting in probably many more hours of installation Smiley: oyvey

Here's for 32bit then.

All you have to do is the InstallFolder bit so it points to where you've installed on the external, and then run both the.reg and .bat from the PlayOnlineViewer folder on the external. Just make sure you keep the double slashes and the drive letter is correct.

If you can't handle this, I recommend you go buy a Mac.

Hell, you can even copy paste bits of it here for me to look over.

So what exactly do I do?

Throw that second link you gave me in the same folder you listed? Then this part? All on my Laptop?

Open the zip, you'll have two files. Put those in the PlayOnlineViewer folder on the external drive.

Figure out the path to the FFXI installation on the external, edit regfix.reg iwth notepad and change the installfolder entries, likely just the drive letter at the start, to match the appropriate folders of the external drive.

Then just doubleclick both files. The resintall.bat one will pop up a command prompt for half a second and disappear, no problem, the regfix.reg will ask to add registry entries.

All these do is what reinstalling FFXI does sans the file copying.

Question though, will that change my registries for that laptop only?

Or will it ***** up my paths and registries when I try to play on the desktop again?
