The beginning of the end?

Sony has ceased shipping PlayStation 2 units in Japan, according to a Famitsu report (via Kotaku). Once the current stock in the Island nation is gone, it will not be re-supplied.

The PS2 launched in Japan during March 2000, and to date has shipped over 150 million units worldwide. More than 10,000 titles are available for the console, and Sony has sold in excess of 1.52 billion PS2 games since launch.

PS2 units continue to be produced and sold in other regions. No mention was made concerning when this may change. Though Sony has ceased PS2 shipments in Japan, the company continues to develop titles for the platform.

Probably not for another year or so, and only if the PS4 (supposed to be around sometime next year apparently) isn't PS2 compatible. They shipped and supported the PS2 product line in NA long after the PS2 in NA was without an HDD.

It's still going to go on for a while. There will be lots of them on Ebay and such even after they're not made anymore.

Ofcourse the actual point would be that sony should never have ripped out backwards compatibility from the PS3 so they could continue to sell two consoles at the same time, but they're not going to fix that anytime soon. And once the PS4 or whatever comes that -does- support PS2 games again (doubtful), none of those games are going to be relevant anymore. Let alone available for purchase from anywhere but Ebay or whatever people will be using.

But since Sony only profits from console sales and not from the games themselves, there really is no point for them to make PS2 games playable on newer consoles. No one is going to buy a PS4 just so they can play PS2 games. And i very much doubt having that backwards compatibility is going to be the deciding factor for a lot of people when it comes to purchasing one.

Game developers should simply re-release their PS2 games on the PS3. (Here's a clear and obvious hint for you SE). I'd love to play Xenosaga, i never got to play anything but the first one, which did get re-released, but the other ones i didnt play never did. Same for a bunch of obscure PS2 games that simply had its own charm and uniqueness.

End of what, precisely, apart from PS2 shipments to Japan?

Is this another FFXI is dying thread?

People think that this will mean no more ffxi on the ps2 but I don't think so. It'll proly be up on the PS2 until the DNAs server goes down.

Well, I've always said that SE will likely support XI on the PS2 as long as Sony supports the PS2 itself.

They're ending shipments, but not support. However, ending support tends to follow a few years after ending shipments.

Obviously SE is still supporting the PS2 in Japan with Adoulin, so we're not escaping "PS2 Limitations" anytime soon. I'm pretty sure we never will. Even when they finally cease support I doubt they'll put forth the time, money, and effort to do away with them. That is assuming they even know how. I know I'm pessimistic, but I think I'm being more realistic than those out there expecting hefty retooling and modernization.

Yeah I keep imagining an expansion where they update the physics of the game (jumping, flying swimming). .. But I am, as usual, dreaming in technicolour.

FFXI: Seekers of Adoulin (or perhaps another future expansion [hopefully SE decides to make more]) may be the last PS2 game ever released. Yeah, it's Japan-only, but it's the last official PS2 game. Had Sony not screwed the HDD in NA, Seekers of Adoulin might have seen a NA release.

Actually, didn't they drop the backwards compatibility because the cost of the console with it was so much higher than other consoles on the market at the time? I know that I didn't buy it when it came out because the price tag was incredibly high for not a lot of machine. When the slim models with larger hdd's started coming out, that's when I got mine.
