Any graphic issues with a laptop are more than likely going to be the result of the video card, especially if integrated. Downside of laptops is they're also harder to upgrade the hardware on. If you're really set on keeping with the game, consider looking for an older PC on the cheap you could use exclusively with XI and would at least support one PCI-E video card. At the very least with my old PC, I can attest that a NVidia 480XT or some such was more than adequate for the game, and by now it's at least an 8 year old card. It's unfortunate, but integrated graphics tend to translate to not being optimized for gaming.

Otherwise, everyone's pretty much covered the bases. File check, DirectX, reinstall, proper POL version, and vid card drivers. Also unofficial windower (since official sucks) and possibly tweaking registry values if you're confident with that, but that's usually more for improving graphics than literally fixing them.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you've done everything you can to run down this problem, your vid chip/integrated card may not be able to handle it, or 3D much at all. This is why I recommended in my guide that you run the benchmark before you install. I should go back and add both on low and high. From what I've seen the bench usually shows if you can run it before you install, which saves some hassle. That might of even shown your erm, no chara problem before you installed. (It does show a massive amount of taru at one point)

All I can say is consider getting a desktop PC; used will work as long as it has a decent video card. Or if your heart is set on a laptop, get one that you can play newer games on so you KNOW it can handle 3D graphics, even if you have to install the older DirectX first. I mean I'm still running it on a 9 year old desktop pc that I'm thinking of repping soon as I can scrape up the $$ because I need to go to Windows 7 very soon or I won't get windows updates anymore. (Since it's so old, I'd rather go whole hog and basically get a new pc, tho I'm going to put a new pc under it really; total rebuild. All my pcs have been custom builds) And its vid card (another reason I'm a tad worried and want to rebuild; I can't get a rep anymore without jumping though some major hoops) is a AGP card.

You can get some decent bare bones kits from NewEgg for just a few hundred dollars. If you want prebuilt, I might suggest taking a look at NewEgg's refurbished systems. I can personally vouch that the HP DC5800 is a pretty solid system for its age (that's what I'm typing on right now at work!) and you can get it re-furbished with Windows 7 for under $200. Just drop in a PCIex16 video card (can be had for $30) and its good to go. It runs FFXI without a struggle.

Thank you catwho for that! I'll look for those barebones kits when I can work up the money (it's that tight). One of my worries was getting Windows 7 legally; as I said in the guide, I like to know where my software has been, and that goes triple for my operating system. I plain flat out refuse to pirate anything. And with operating systems, I prefer to have the physical disks because sh*t happens that can cause you to reload the operating system sometimes.

That also reduces my estimate for getting it done. Buy barebones, I assume that includes windows, and then a vid card and hdd; I proly could get it done (and hand my old one off sans hdd for Neko to turn into a linux fileserver) cheaper than I thought. I thought I'd have to spend about $1k for a decent system. ^^ (I repped my hdd not too long ago so it's still good, I'd reformat it for a data drive since I could get a much bigger one for the main disk)

Anyway, for now this pc runs FFXI without a struggle but yeah. With Windows XP basically due to go out of support, I'd rather go to windows 7 soon as I can work up the money to upgrade the system. ^^

You should be careful because some bare bones come with the OS, and some don't. "Windows 8 ready" may not actually have Windows 8 included.

My base kit was $297 without an OS. I added in a very good $75 video card with the initial installation. Then, over the last year and a half, I upgraded to 16 GB of RAM ($50 for four 4 gig DDR3 sticks), a 120 SSD for the OS ($109), a new PSU ($60), a 2 tb external USB for backups ($89), and two new 22" LED monitors ($200.) At this point, the only thing I can still upgrade is the CPU (the kit came with an AMD Athlon II X4, but an AM3 socket motherboard so I can still go up to a six core Phenom II), and I still haven't broken a thousand dollars for a gaming class workstation yet.

The DC 5800 I linked comes with Windows 7 as part of its refurbishment.

haha the funny part is this Laptop runs Aion very well, the character models show up on the benchmark which is really weird lol, Thanks for all the help in this thread... I'll just wait until I get my tax return, I planned on building a BEAST then anyways :)

I had the same problem on my Macbook Air with graphics card Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 (running on bootcamp) which I use on my travels. The problem is actually with the latest graphics driver (v9.x.x.x) which is updated in a windows update. The solution will be to do a rollback on the graphics driver to the previous version (8.15.10.2696).

Kelvar I love you, Installed the Driver Version you specified and it works like a charm now, I guess I just didn't roll my drivers back far enough. Thanks alot man, and thanks to everybody for your patience.
#36 Nov 16 2012 at 9:55 AM Rating: Excellent
Congrats on getting it working!

Now, be careful - if you have automatic Windows updates turned on, it'll try to reinstall the newest version. You can block or hide the update on the Windows Update.

Hello, my old gaming laptop just died so I bought an alienware m14x with windows 8. After loading it up and fresh install, I have the same problem. No characters are loading on the screen. The laptop has the following specs:

PROCESSOR 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
OPERATING SYSTEM Windows 8, 64-bit, English
MEMORY 8GB (2 X 4GB) Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
HARD DRIVE 500GB 7,200 RPM SATA 3Gb/s
VIDEO CARD 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M with Optimus™
LCD PANEL 14.0" High Def (720p/1366x768) with WLED backlight
WIRELESS CARDS Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230 With Bluetooth 4.0
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

I do not know much about laptops, but I found out after I purchased it that it has an additional graphics card integrated Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000. From what I have read, the computer can determine when it is appropriate to switch between the two.

I would like to try the driver rollback fix, but do not know where to begin. Can anyone help?

FFXI's render-to-texture method makes it appear to be a 2D game to modern hardware, hence it doesn't prompt switching to the NVidia graphics.

I don't remember if there was a method to force it to the dedicated card.

Shot in the dark, but Nvidia's control panel has a Manage 3D settings where you can specify a particular program. May have to tweak it for both POL and whatever exe FFXI uses.

FFXI is just POL.exe, trufax. You can tell by enabling FXAA and junk depending on driver.

Awesome, thank you very much. This was a very quick solution for those suffering the problem that have an NVidia card and the Intel HD 4000 card. I went to the NVidia graphics settings menu, selected the 3D Manager and found the FFXI (POL) program and set it to use NVidia card instead of the automatically selected Intel HD 4000 card. This leads me to believe that whether due to a driver error or not, the Intel HD 4000 card was the problem. Since my fix was simple, I did not have to roll back any drivers. Thanks again!

I had the same problem as you with a new laptop I got for Christmas. What I ended up doing was getting a hold of a copy of Windows 7 and formatting / install Win 7 instead of 8.

After that I had two things go my way. 1) I was able to get an older version of the graphics driver that worked with my laptop 2) I wasn't using Windows 8 anymore.

I had the same issue with my lappy.

Roll back the driver a bit:
Right click bottom left corner -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> Right click HD 4000 -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update Driver... -> Browse my computer... -> Let me pick... -> Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2)

Be careful Windows Update doesn't just put the new driver back on.

Intel is aware of the issue: http://communities.intel.com/message/176296

I believe the IPG 2000, 3000, and 4000 all seem to be the ones that have the problems with Windows 8.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate :/ and fix that anyone has figured out?
#50 Feb 13 2013 at 8:55 PM Rating: Good
Solution:

Back down to older video drivers.

I had to do this for my son's laptop after a fresh install; I initially grabbed the latest Intel drivers off the ASUS site and he couldn't see any character models. After we removed them and went to the previous version, everything was fine.

We also tried installing DX9, I'm not sure if that affected anything.
