Greetings and salutations!

It seems we could use an interesting topic like this again. I've played this game for atleast 8 to 9 years, and i believe i've seen just about everything there is, but i LOVE exploring things. Finding out about curious structures, Easter Eggs, and things that stand out or should not be a part of the natural world.

I'm looking to be surprised, and i want to experience new things, so i'd like you all to share Urban Legends and World "wonders" about FFXI and it's places. Not just for me, but for other people as well that are curious and never knew these things existed.

Things that are similar to, for example, the Full Moon opening up the secret Path in Ro'Maeve, the Strange Apparatus's found behind the imaginary walls all throughout Vana'Diel or places not normally reached or traveled that hold interesting sights.

I'm convinced there must be more things like this in the world.

I dunno if this qualifies or if everybody already knew this, but everytime someone completes the SMN flag quest, a rainbow will appear over the crag of Holla on the next game day. I just learned that a few days ago, and I had been playing forever. lol

The opening scene from FF9 is on one of the tapestries in Chateau d'Orguille. It's located behind the throne room in one of the hallways that leads to the king's quarters.

The tapestry in the lobby area, next to the NPC who lets you out, appears to be the cathedral in Tavnazia before it was half buried underground in the explosion from Lightbringer.

The wells in San d'Oria, which simply say "This is a well", are an homage to FF1, where the wells said the exact same thing when you examined them.

You can see the ruins of old Tavnazia from Blueblade Fell which is marked on the Lufaise Meadows map. I believe it's the same view you see in the opening movie, which was made before CoP was even released.

I always thought the wyrm in Lufaise Meadows was a nice touch.

If you go to the Leremieu Lagoon any day at around 14:00-14:30, a wyrm swoops down over the Lagoon and flies past.

People had widespread urban legends about making Goblins drop their bombs.

There's mysteries, such as where the other Astral Candescences from the Salvage Remnants are, then there's at least 1 unused map per Assault Zone (one has a few unused maps) which ties in to an Assault rank that was deleted in March 2007. There's also some unreachable island in Zhayolm.

There's some NMs that have been in the game since 2003 and have yet to have their pics posted. Some Moblin Maze Mongers NMs may not have been encountered yet (at least no reports of them being so).

Did we ever get a good answer what was up with Almighty Apkallu and how it spawns?

If you follow a Goblin Digger, he will at some point (seems to be once every 15-30 minutes) actually stop and dig. He will bury an item, stomp on it a few times to pack the earth down again, and continue on his way.

If you dig with a chocobo where he buried the stuff, you'll dig up the items needed for the quest Orlando's Antiques. I dug up a Goblin Cup that way.

His buddy, the Goblin Archaeologist, can be coaxed to the surface by trading items to the ??? that spawns around the Crags. The amount of surfacing he does is based on the NPC sellable value of the items, not the quantity. (The more valuable you seem to be, the more willing he is to come up so he can pounce on you.)

Neat thread! To go with it, a couple of neat NMs:

Taisaijin - http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Taisaijin
This NM was added as an inside joke, a nod to a rumor amongst the playerbase at the time that the then-rare scroll of Refresh was dropped by a Taisai in Ranguemont Pass (which was obviously not true). Fun fact: He's the only mob in the entire game who casts Refresh on himself, and he drops one of the most awful items statwise in the game, the Spelunker's Hat (which is similar to an Optical Hat, except it SUBTRACTS those stats instead of adding them).

Voluptuous Vilma - http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Voluptuous_Vilma
One of the rarest NMs in the entire game due to its insane spawn conditions. First, a placeholder Overgrown Rose in Yuhtunga Jungle must be left alone (as in, ZERO player actions taken upon it) for 10 hours, after which it will morph into Rose Garden. Rose Garden must then be left up for an unknown amount of time, after which it will morph into Voluptuous Vilma. It's Rare/EX drop has meh stats, but is so incredibly rare, it's highly sought after as a trophy piece. The ring was even a Rank 4 prize during the 2010 Mog Bonanza.

I was going to mention Almighty Apkallu as well, but I see I've been beaten to it :P

The same 3 npcs that act as Rivals while raising chocobos are the same 3 npcs used during the assault tutorial cut-scene. They are also involved in a quest that puts them in a romantic love triangle with each other after accidentally being drugged with a love potion.

I am pretty sure naja's assistant wears the sublinger popularly known as "panties," which is revealed in one of the rank up quests.

Through out the windurst quest in WoTG the male mithra is shown playing chess by himself. Through out the scholar quest Schultz(Sp) is shown playing chess by himself on the exact same board. Coincidence?

Edit: Some other ones I thought of.

My friend pointed out that before WoTG was released several npcs use to talk about the comet that could be seen during the crystal war. After it was released they no longer talked about it and a mural in quicksand caves depicting the comet was changed or removed.

There's a quest you can do that reveals the story behind the Mandy freelance for campaign. After completing the quest so long as you maintain the title given by it Mandies in the past will use Photosynthesis on you.

Taking the theme of urban legend, I like to just point out a theory a friend and I came to while analyzing the ToAU story-line. That Nyzul Isle was actually the original Alexander, the one depicted in the painting on Luzaf ship. That salvage made up his 4 legs and that the area Nyzul isle investigation takes place in. is it's body.

There's a twinkling tree in West Sarutabaruta. I think, never been able to find it again. Pretty sure it's involved in a quest.

In Jeuno, there's 5 HNMs outside Jeuno in both the immediate outside zone and the zone linking to it (skipping Pashow, oddly). Each of these are 21-24 hour respawn monsters. They're all the same level (50-55 in "HNM" levels). They all have insanely low drop rates. They're all also in pretty hard to reach places.

Roc
Simurgh
King Arthro
Lumber Jack
Waraxe Beak

Out of these, Waraxe Beak stands out as an oddity. Four of the NMs drop useful items that relate to the abilities of the monster. King Arthro attacks fast and uses Hundred Fists. Roc uses Benediction. Simurgh has incredibly high evasion and uses Perfect Dodge. Lumber Jack uses Blood Weapon (and it drains on hit? maybe?).

Waraxe Beak, uhh.. Where does "rain" even come from? It never rains in M. Mountains, nor is he strong or weak against Water abilities. He doesn't cast them either. They're also incredibly weak gloves and they've been useless as far as I can remember. It's long been suspected that they're one of the items remaining with an undiscovered hidden effect.

Noble Mold is another interesting NM. People have thought they've figured it out for years, but there's evidence that conflicts just about anything. Is it correlated to the seasons? Probably. What else? Nobody really knows. It just takes way too much time to get it to spawn once, yet alone enough to properly test all of the variables.

The amount of mystery they've thrown into this game is insane. These are just the ones off the top of my head. There's something curious in just about every zone.

One time when I was wandering around Meripitaud as a level 55ish WHM, I stumbled accross a dead WAR on the ground. I hopped off my chocobo and started to raise him. He told me to (Run away!) and not to raise him; he was waiting for a Raise III from a LS member. Before I could finish casting the spell, Waraxe Beak found me and proceeded to make Tarutaru mincemeat out of me.

Later on, as a level 75 WHM/NIN equipped with double hammers and Reverand Mail, I went out and kicked that NM's ass in revenge. Took me a while, but I whittled him down. And he didn't even drop a damn crystal.

Stop by Aydeewa Subterrane sometime. Little purple spiders hang from the ceiling right in your face. Really startled me first time I saw one.

If it's what I'm thinking of, it was one of the very first post-NA release server events. At least it was the first event I ever remember. The entire server had to come together to kill 12 of those things (you were level capped and they had massive HP). It was also the first and last server vs. server competition. If your world killed all 12 Twinkling Treants you got access to Outpost Warps. A month of two after the event was over, SE gave the ability to all servers anyways even if they didn't kill all the Treants, due to outcry from the less fortunate servers.

That thought makes me grateful suddenly that the dungeon itself is mostly empty except for the vampire dude.

Otherwise, you'll be fighting leeches, and the next thing you known you take "water" damage from out of nowhere and you've got Blind inflicted on you. Or worse, you take earth damage, and end up with the status equivalent of Extremely Bad Breath.

Mostly because some jackass put an extra zero or two on their HP. Some servers beat on them for days and barely put a dent in one or two.

Somebody at SE (Tanaka? Probably Tanaka.) probably had the silly idea of hundreds of people beating on one at once or something, as if the lag wouldn't be absolutely crippling, but they still had even more HP than even that would take down in decent time.

Let several Apkallu hop on the deck and leave them alone. If the spawn timers or whatever the other conditions there may be are up, two of them will walk over to each other and one will depop and repop as Almighty. There can be as many as 3 of him on one trip, so I have no idea if there even is a repop, I've seen on apkallu turn while fighting another Almighty.

That's assuming you get really lucky on gutting the fish. Lu shang's are 9 million~ right now and my ebisu fish would have ended up costing 15 million~.

Also you need level 78 fishing to start the ebisu quest anyway, so you pretty much need a lu shang's first.

There's a flower floating a foot off the ground in the Konschtat Highlands on the west side.

Pet Food biscuits are a stable time loop. Choh Moui is credited with inventing them on the biscuits themselves. However when you go back in time and trade them to her, she has no idea what they are, and invents them based on the idea. So they were never actually invented but exist anyway.

Trickster Kinetix, the NM weapon in quifim Island, is a douche. He tricks you into camping him, then drops a perfectly ordinary, craftable tabar at a 1% drop rate for your effort. He's tricksy.

You've activated my Trap card! Galka perfume!

But those cards, i think someone once mentioned they prevented aggro from the type of Cardian you carried the card from. i.e. Eight of Swords card prevented aggro from Eight of Swords. Not sure if there's any truth behind that though.

I'm more curious about the Doll Gizmo from the Manipulator myself. JP have been buying those for ages now, and no one in the NA/EU community seems to know what it's used for. Other than that stealing it from the Manipulator weakens it. Having it on you doesnt do anything, so why are they buying it?

I'm not exactly sure, but I have noticed he is spawning constantly now that the huge NM's in besieged are being defeated. Before the level cap went up, I would never see it, now I do like 3/6 boat rides.

I'll give it up, what I found out, after months of researching..This info last time I checked was still not on ffxi wiki or here.

In 'May' or 'June' (months 5 & 6) of the vanadiel calender, Sanctuary of Zitah gets a rainy/monsoon season. It starts in the middle of the month of May, and extends halfway into June. During this time period, double rain occurs 1-3 times a day; this 'season' lasts for for about 3-4 vanadiel weeks.

Noble Mold will spawn in the very beginning of that season, usually the 2-4th day into it, this is only if its placeholder has been up for 24hours. After its defeated, it will spawn every 24hours** during this 'season'. This translates to about 3-4 possible spawns during this 'season'. When the season is over, it will not spawn until the next such 'season' next year!

If you read about the term 'noble mold' it is a special type of mold that appears on wine grapes only under very certain weather conditions, and makes the finest wine, this somewhat coincides what I have found.

Anyone interested about this, or that wants to hop in the mystery machine to solve other mysteries, I'm Bligh on Ragnarok.

** - Not sure if the spawn time is 20/21-24hours or just straight 24hrs, dont feel like checking my notes right now.

Did we ever get a good answer what was up with Almighty Apkallu and how it spawns?

I'm not exactly sure, but I have noticed he is spawning constantly now that the huge NM's in besieged are being defeated. Before the level cap went up, I would never see it, now I do like 3/6 boat rides.

You see it more often because SE changed the spawn conditions. Source.

I actually have the answer to Waraxe Beak.

Back in 2010, I compiled all the info I had on the history of NMs in FFXI (when they were added and a little bit more) and did some further research- http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26148
Anyway, Roc, Simurgh, King Arthro, Lumber Jack as well as Behemoth were part of the first wave of HNMs added to the game, being added in the Sept 2002 update (yep, FFXI HNMs just celebrated their 10th anniversary). The 4 directional Shadows were added then too. The 7 Sin Skeletons were added in Nov 2002, Serket & Capricious Cassie in Dec 2002, rounding off FFXI Vanilla.

Some of the biggest surprises were the launch of Rise of the Zilart added a number of new NMs, some HNMs, to Original zones. I knew the huge HNM Rams were added then but didn't know until I looked into it Waraxe Beak was, Cemetery Cherry (KRT was expanded with RotZ, Bostanieux was greatly expanded), and Sea Horror. And Delkfutt's Tower was a rather empty place NM-wise before RotZ.

The relevant portion of that tome-
- Yes, Waraxe Beak being from RotZ is a bit of a surprise. I found 2 references to Waraxe Beak in 5/03, none earlier. I should have noticed it wasn't on any 2002 NM list and the fact that it was one of the few seeming 1.0 NMs that could not be found with a "copyright 2002" pic, just "copyright 2002, 2003" pic (like all the Gigas NMs besides Mimas, like Sea Horror). The clue should have been the gear as well. Waraxe Beak drops Monsoon Tekko (effect in rainy weather). Sea Horror drops Monsoon Kyahan, Voll the Sharkfinned drops Monsoon Jinpachi, and Mouu the Waverider drops Monsoon Spear. All of them are from 4/03.

It's an oddity from new content being added to old zones and not exactly blending in seamlessly. The Nov 2009 NMs were far, FAR, worse in that regard though.

If you want to know many things about NMs you won't normally find on a wiki (well, historical backgrounds got added to their pages), it's probably in that topic. I also included some of the substance of what was in each update besides the NMs, as well as many oddities (like the Awd Goggie mystery, mysteries with Goliath, Glyryvilu, Yilbegan, trying to untangle Expeditionary Forces, et al) and singled out NMs that were highly overlooked. I gotta add everything since Sept 2010. Maybe I can add the history of magic spells, abilities, and traits too at some point. If you love FFXI history, hopefully you'll really enjoy reading this. There are such things as Sky actually not being the 1st tiered NM pyramid in the game, the time the Avatars were treated like HNMs to hunt, what hand a hurricane had in issues surrounding Chains of Promathia's release, the story of the mysterious 32nd Zeni NM, which enemies disappeared from the game entirely, and more.

And some other points:
- IIRC, one of the signature crystals had no possible use due to not being involved in any crafting recipes that could make a signable item. I think it was the thunder signature crystal.

- How about the black sheep NM Peallaidh? It drops Nightmare Gloves, an item with no practical use.

In Valkurm, there are some six foot tall (twice as tall as a taru) flowers just south of the oasis. These are not in the PS2 version. I was kind of freaked out to see them when I ditched the PS2.

Very interesting read, I had forgotten about things like the Crawler NM's in the nest. Also fun to hear about the level 50 cap and things like Ranguemont Pass and beyond.

People may of not noticed, but a lot of cooking recipes that involve foods that you can find in RL are remarkably true to real life. I haven't seen anyone comment on this but..If you do pie dough, it's almost the same (except you use ice water instead of a crystal) as the ig recipe. Also you know Gooey Gerard? His jug, Cloudy Wheat Broth is similar to a way to catch/kill slugs! That is,flour, beer (Heh..well, they couldn't use beer outright in this game, not to mention there isn't such thing. So they kinda had to use water) and coriander.

I just find that funny when I notice things like that. ^^

What still perplexes me is the non-NM's in Batialla & Rolanberry. Tottering Toby & Triple Black Stars. Tottering toby drops the stumbling sandals (lvl 24, def 5, dex & agi -10 abouts) and Triple Black Stars that drops no non-regular-bat items. Why did SE include these near useless NM's ? Especially in regions that are known for their HNM's with amazing gear. Ive done some testing on a Stumbling Sandals hidden effect, but still can't find one. Im thinking if there is a hidden effect, its a magical bonus, because any melee bonus would have to be more than substantial to outweigh the -10 dex.

Sure they have a function now with the Hunt Registry, but the HR came out years and years after they were introduced.

Also an interesting point of note, all Goblin food items use standard RL ingredients but have 1 or 2 really strange ingredients.

Goblin Bread: Bone Chips & Poison Dust
Goblin Pie: Crayfish
Goblin Drink: Elshimo Newt

Black Triple Stars is a Mobile Suit Gundam reference, but that's about it.

Lot of those Notorious Monsters are required kills for the Miraculous Dale quest, so it's possible that they were added specifically for that.

Stumbling Sandals have the hidden effect of creating years of Maat related rumours.

No NMs were added for that quest; all of them were monsters that already existed and were given a new purpose.

?!
The Miraculous Dale was added many years after those NMs, June 2008 to be exact.

Was it that late into the game? It felt like that quest had been in the game for ages now.
