ATTN: New/Returning/Nostalgic PlayersFollow

Hello all. I’ve recently returned to FFXI for the umpteenth time and am enjoying myself immensely. I find it a bit sad, however, that it seems like nobody really tackles the old content anymore and the game is very abyssea-centric. That’s fine and all, and I enjoy abyssea as well, but I keep finding myself looking back on ‘the old days’ with warm memories and wishing I could relive those times. I realize that with all of the changes the game has undergone, nothing will ever be like it was back when CoP and ToAU were new, but I still think there is a lot of enjoyment to be had in tackling the older content.

What I’ve decided to do is create a linkshell that will be dedicated to reliving some of the old times and helping new/returning players experience the full depth of FFXI and not just the gusgen > c. nest > bostineaux > abyssea grind. That doesn’t mean that we won’t do page burns or abyssea at all, to keep everyone leveling, but I’d like to focus on things like ZMs, Promys, ToAU, Dynamis, Campaign, etc. (whatever the majority of members end up wanting to do). Completing rank missions or things like divine might or o-hat runs, even if the rewards aren’t as functional today as they once were, can still be fun. I’d also like to focus on helping new and returning players find their way in the new vana’diel, with simple things like job quests, LBs, etc.

Essentially what I intend to do is create a LS in which recruitment is always open and everyone is welcome regardless of level or previous experience. The aim will be to help everyone advance towards their goals but to do so without solely focusing on exp grinding and instead having fun and taking on a lot of the older content along the way. At this point, I get a lot more enjoyment out of helping others than I do from getting another job to 99 and that's the mentality I'd like to see from anyone who is ultimately interested in joining. I’m currently located on Shiva, but I’m open to moving servers if there becomes a high demand elsewhere. If you’re interested, post here, PM me or try to catch me online by sending a /tell to Craine.

Hopefully I’m not the only one who feels this way and some of you will show an interest.

There's a huge difference between people being jaded and ignorant of old content (Divine Might), and knowing which content is plainly and simply not worth anybody's time (OHat).

Great point. Thank you so much for your insight.

(I thought my post made it pretty clear that the point is simply to enjoy old content, whether the rewards are still functional and worthwhile or not... I guess I wasn't clear enough).

That is contingent on the content actually being enjoyable. Farming eyes for six hours for whoever wants one and finding somebody who still has alchemy leveled (probably the most useless craft to have past 60 now) to synth them and then spend two hours getting somebody a paintbrush (they are stingy with that key), ten minutes getting them to do the painting right, and then five minutes fighting Hakutaku if you bring 99s... When there's stuff like this on the AH that you could just buy and have eight hours to better spend.

You can do something as a group because it's relevant. You can do something as a group because it's enjoyable. You should never subject anybody to something that is neither.

Again, did I come off as some kind of future LS dictator in my post? Did I make it sound like my intention is to start my own LS so that I can "subject" anyone who joins to tortuously slow and irrelevant grinds? How badly do you want to nitpick my selection of hypothetical "old school" activities that a shell could do? The point is that even things like getting my O-hat, as trying as it was, are now looked back upon as fond memories because the challenge that the group had to go through to achieve it is what made the game so enjoyable. The point is simply that the shell would do older content not unlike O-hat runs. Why do you even care? Where is your need for feeling superior and making profoundly important commentary coming from?

Because this rose-tinted attitude and snobbish sense of 'old game was better and more challenging' (read: time wasting) is rather cancerous around here.

Just trying to set you on the better path of not being another nostalgic bint in pink gear and all alone in his own linkshell.

Ohhh I see. It's out of your overflowing fountain of selfless benevolence that you feel the need to be a raging douche. If I'd have known earlier...

I don't see how it's your concern if I (and perhaps others) want to do older quests and missions which have story and narrative attached to them regardless of whether or not I get something worthwhile out of it (and here I have the inkling that our opinions of 'worthwhile' will differ). Oh, and while I appreciate the concern my gear on the jobs I'm most serious about is just fine, thank you. I'm glad to have you looking out for me though.

I personally love the story of the Ohat.

OP you should've picked a better example than Ohat because people are naturally gonna pick on that. Divine Might? Yeah that's a fun fight. Ohat? It's every bit as irritating as Raelix said.

Granted. I didn't exactly plan out the OP in advance though or worry about what some uninterested yet unable to contain his criticism elitist would nitpick out of it. The point of the OP and sentiment behind it remain the same. That shouldn't be a difficult concept.

No, no, you misunderstood. It's not your opinion that nobody wants to waste their time on something that's useless (again, though, that entire perspective still centers around nitpicking a SINGLE word from my OP) that makes you an elitist jerk; its your "I speak for everyone when I say so" attitude. You have every right to not be interested in "wasting your time". You can demonstrate your lack of interest by simply not responding. Or you can derail the entire purpose of the thread by feeling the need to educate me and assert that you're just "helping" me to choose a better path than being some under-geared scrub who yearns for the good old days. Doesn't sound elitist at all. Take a hike, Jack.

It didn't sound like you knew what content was relevant these days. Even Divine Might is on the cusp. You listed Promyvion like you've totally missed a particular update. Dynamis for currency is practically a solo event now. These things are still fun at least, but not something anyone would jump shells for.

You words precisely were "whatever the majority of members end up wanting to do" and that is not gonna be any of these things you listed in a group fashion.

So what you've created is the standard Social Linkshell. It's nothing novel, and it doesn't even sound like you're particularly qualified to run one.

Whether you want my straight up opinion or not, it sounds more like you're an old outcast player like me who sees that all the content they were snubbed on before can be done with schmucks and you wanna do it just to say you did. Better than being an old hotshot player who wants to create a points shell these days anyway. Cut the crap dude, anyone can see you just wanna scrape people together to help you on things you hadn't finished yet. Just skip the filler and join the crowd already.

Most anyone still playing FFXI has either 1. Sat through ten years of filler already or 2. Has better things to progress on to get them up to speed that they can do actually relevant things with their friends.

Holy crap my friend. What server are you on? I have all of the gear I could ever need from the events I mentioned; I'd love to show you in game. I miss the old, group organized feel of those events along with the story that was told and haven't done it in years. I feel like I would enjoy doing it over. Where do you get off determining who is qualified to do anything at all and psychoanalyzing the motives of individuals you know absolutely zilch about? Please, refer back to my previous post and take a hike. You're a trip.

Ouch. Harsh.

Raelix does have a point. All the stuff you're talking about doing is stuff pretty much any social linkshell does. Although, rather than farming Ohats, we just had a hoe-down in Besieged this afternoon because we're all trying to work on blue mage together.

Rose tinted?

Snobbish?

Cancerous?

Nostalgic bint?

When I saw this thread and the other one from the new guy wanting to revive the old days I knew that the same pathetic trolls who ruin every such thread would crawl out of the woodwork and yup, here's Raelix right on cue to prove me right.

Raelix, he's not looking through rose tinted glasses - it was simply better in the old days. For him and for many other people. If you don't feel the same way, that's fine. Don't join his LS. But don't try to tell people they don't know what they like.

What's cancerous around here and on message boards in general is people like you who can't bear the fact everyone doesn't think the same way you do.

You've been told about your ****** attitude on multiple occasions.

It's just a shame that the mods here have no balls and just try to bury the problem instead of solving it by banning you and your ilk outright. Not because you share a different opinion to the OP, but because you're incapable of being with anyone who doesn't think the same way you do.

There was no reason for you to post in this thread at all. The OP made it perfectly clear how he felt and what type of people he was looking for.

Get it into your thick head. What YOU enjoy isn't what is enjoyable, it's just what you enjoy. Your opinion is not fact, what you think isn't what's right.

You attacking and belittling people because you're incapable of understanding that they do not play for the same reasons you do, is tiresome and detrimental to the board atmosphere as a whole.

In short, shut the **** up, respect the fact people play for different reasons and keep your ignorant and unnecessary bile-laden comments to yourself.

Well this is an angry thread.

Also one of the reasons people quit this game was due to how long old content used to take. JP midnight waits, farming obscure drops for an item to pop something, etc.

I could see a few people at the level cap running through old stuff for nostalgia, but new players wouldnt get this effect. Generally after a month of being back to FFXI I prefer the new methods. No more hour long party gathering, no more week long farming for pops and no more archaic level capped events. I can actually solo XP at a decent rate and get actual results after 8 hours of partying.

Good luck with your LS, you are gonna need it.

Not sure if worth posting on this topic, because most people seem to have made up their mind already.

Divine Might - still see people wearing DM earrings every day. I wouldn't say this is on the cusp... it's still very relevant. Until there's a better DW earring than Supp, this will continue to be popular.

Assault/Salvage - aside from the fact that you have to have 3 people minimum to even participate (please change this SE... please), there are many nice items available in the game that can only be purchased with imperial standing or assault points... how can you build these up if no one is willing to help? I'm not referring to end game pieces, but ones you would like to have while you are leveling - rare/ex weapons etc.

Sky Gods - still some pretty nice pieces available, especially with augments. Situational at best but where you can use on muliple jobs, it fills the gap from dinging 75 to aquiring better end game gear.

Sea - same thing here... not really high end pieces compared to what you can obtain now, but still great as a filler for multiple jobs, plus who can't make use of coins for Boxers/Brutal/Loq?.

I agree Ohat is pretty much a waste of time now, but it's so easy to do as a level 99, if you just want the hat for the heck of it, why not? It's decent for ranger at least for the R-acc. The OP just threw that in as example of older content from a nostalgia point of view. It wasn't really called for to jump all over it and use it as the sole argument as to why his idea sucks...

My LS basically does 3 things.. AF3/Empy runs, VW, and Dynamis for gil. Once in a while I'd like to do some old content just for a change- at least until SoA comes out and gives us entirely new stuff.

I really don't like the way OHat looks, but I <3 my AF2+2 PUP hat. But probably I feel the same way about my Reverend Mail that you do about your OHat. (I could have soloed it on PUP 99, but it's such a pain to get to Shen that I brought two pops so someone else could get one too.)

I should wear my Spelunker's Hat (got it from a Nyzul ??? item) more often to troll people into /checking me.

Or maybe it has something to do with all the "OLD FFIX WAS SO MUCH BETTERAR I WANNA TO START OLDSKOOL LS" talk we've been seeing lately? Gets kind of old after a while. Seeing "I wanna start an LS" threads on =10 is also kind of annoying in itself because LSes are server-specific.

(Oooh, reading further into the thread, I think Raelix took the nasty a bit too far. Sure, seeing "I wanna nostalgia linkshell" threads is getting tiring, but it's not bad enough to justify that.)

My theory has been that there are many more people that talk about doing old content than there are that are willing to do, or remember at all, that content. There's also that I doubt they're willing to do some content the way it was originally intended to be done (level capped or 75 max for starters) so it isn't "true" nostalgia. So far there's never really been updates from the people who take initiative to start up.

My LS came up with a good idea to enjoy doing things as a group. We started a list in our Facebook group that everyone puts one thing they want to do. We then set up a time to meet and whoever shows we /random to decide what we're going to do that evening, then we go do it. Someone gets something done, and everyone gets to hang together. Win for everyone.

If you are having fun participating in an in-game activity, and the people in your party are also having fun, then the event is relevant. Maybe the effort::reward ratio isn't what certain people would consider worthwhile, but that's why they're doing their own thing and not in your party having fun with you doing whatever you're doing.

If you and your party are having fun, and you're not hurting or intentionally inconveniencing other players, then you're doing it right. This is a game, after all.

Just my two cents.

He speaks for me and I don't even know him.

Where the chips stack in our favor is that we see these posts crop up frequently (there is even one started by "ThePatrician" 3 hours after you started this) and eventually the usual suspects start showing up talking about how 6 man parties taught us so much, that renkei making was somehow the epitomy of skill and challenge in this game, and they quit because Abyssea ruined their game of standing around in level 75 armor that was 6 years old.

This has been done to death. Post in your sever forums or ask people in game. Better yet, do a poll in Port Jeuno. 99% of the people will laugh at you but you don't care about that because you have thick skin and by golly you're going to get people their accomplishments. Good for you. The 1% of people you're after will join and you'll be happy.

We see your post frequently around here and we're worried that SE will think this is what a majority of people want to return to because they have a knack for taking the least relevant, least common denominator and then taking that and suggesting it is what players want (e.g., NeoEvoliths + about 6 other Neos).

Good luck on your endeavors. Please be cognizant of the fact that SE takes public postings and turns them into "OHHHH so this is what the playerbase wants!", where "this" = some things that most of us who have actively played the game this whole time and aren't fair weather subscribers actually do not want.

I know tons of players are totally against the idea of a old school LS, but there is still a few of us who like the idea. There is nothing wrong with the way someone wants to play, everyone is different. I wish there was a way to transfer servers I would love a LS like that, but the server's I have seen being advertised in these forums I havent been lucky enough for one of them to be mine. Relevant to Ohat back in 2004 days. Walhra turban also applied to this in my opinion.

TVtropes links should be a bannable offense. Somehow I ended up on "The Little Detecto" two hours later and I challenge somebody to figure out how...

Ditto. I went to it once, looked around, saw a bunch of people with entirely too much time their hands classify and quantifying every single form of media to the point of absurdity and left. I haven't been back since.

I totally get what MC is saying. I left when the cap went to 80. Someone said lots of people left because it took hours and hours to get anything done. I don't think that's true I think they left because the game started to change to much when aby came out. I only read the first 10 post on this thread so I'm not educated on what everyone said but I know raelix is an elitist dumb ****. People want to return to how they remember it when it was good. As for raelix comments on ohat being a waste of time, are you serious what's an mmo? You put all this work into something and in a few years the game shuts down in the end its all a waste of time dude. Get off your high horse ********
