Ok, so I reactivated my account on April 1st, 12-1am EST. I did it at that time for this very reason; hoping I wouldn't get charged for all of March.
Billing is where SE is, not where you are. You played for several hours in March.
Why are people so determined to try to game the system on this? The closed reg servers tell you exactly where the monthly cutoff is. Do it before the servers go down, and you played in the previous month. Do it after, and you played the following month. And, if you ask SE this (or read your service contract) then it's all laid out pretty clearly.
I know money is tight for some people. I absolutely get that. But, I can't help but think that if you're so tight on cash that you'll try so hard to avoid $13, then maybe in general you should be saving your cash for more important things than FFXI. This is the cost of a movie and popcorn, and if you want to play so badly why not just pay the cost of a two-hour movie to play for only a couple of days at the end of the month? And, if you don't want to play that badly, then you can certainly wait until servers are up on the 2nd.
It's a frivolous entertainment expense regardless, but I never see people thinking this hard about other entertainment purchases. Something about MMO billing just seems to put everyone in the mood of trying to exact every drop of value possible for their purchase. I can't tell if MMOs somehow have a less financially-independent player base than most videogames, or if MMO players are just the type to begrudge every penny spent for some reason.
For me, personally, even in months where I barely play, $13 seems like such good value for the time I put in that I feel like I'm getting a deal. I imagine for most players, the money spent on the game ends up being pennies an hour.
