Actually the fact that FFXI is still around 500k players means this is not a reason for this. SE has implemented a lot of annoying features yes, but the population remains relatively the same despite the game being out for 7 years.
Comparing WoW's population to FFXI's is pretty silly to. WoW reached that many subscribers because they market to everyone, especially the casual player. FFXI is marketed to more hard core players. Most of us FFXI players are more than happy that FFXI doesn't reach the same audience that WoW does.
Also, 500k is a pretty decent number for a non-WoW pay to play MMO.
