Connection Issue from South KoreaFollow

#77 Sep 02 2008 at 10:43 AM Rating: Decent

The tech guy was pretty much unwilling to look at the problem at all. I asked him if there was anything at all we could to try to figure out what it was but he refused and kept saying that there was nothing he could do except cancel my accounts for me. He flat out refused to try to solve the problem.

Man, this is gay. I got the same response from Joseph C.

If Square Enix is blocking IP addresses then Google proxy server, you should be able find one with little problem. They have free servers too but use at your own risk.

note. You will need a proxy server with the IP address based in that country...

i jsut double checked the playonline website, and apparently there were accounts banned on the 26 last week, and i was thinking maybe that alot of south korea was caught in that..

No, I'm pretty sure most people still have their accounts; they just can't access them due to POL being a jerk. Plus, if it were bannings, it would have affected us on the 27th not the 28th. My friend is meriting on my account anyways.

Looks to me like he was reading from a script.

If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

He probably was, but he told me he would write a note to the server administrator, which makes me think that he was trying to help (or maybe that's just what he said to get me off the line lol).

I'm planning to talk to SE again. They need to acknowledge that players in Korea are having a hard time logging in.

I'm just going to get a new ISP if I can. I can still log in using wireless, but only on one of my computers and only in a certain part of my apartment.

Well KT is perma-wired into my apartment right now (fiber), so switching isn't an option. What are the ISP's confirmed to work with FFXI, possibly I could get a second connection (cable / DSL) and use that one for FFXI only (would suck having to pay more money for this game....).

Well, you guys can switch ISPs, I'll just keep pestering SE, since there is a slight possibility that other ISPS might become effected as well and I rather get it over with now instead of later. I hate dodging complicated issues, and tackling SE will not be a problem for me.

PS: Would be easier if everyone just called/chatted with the tech people. Strength in numbers as they say, I believe I'm the one bothering SE and KT the most, lol. I've been talking to KT every day since the incident with numerous e-mails, visits, and phone calls. I have been calling and webtechin' it up with SE to no avail (been talking to SE from 1-9 every morning). It doesn't work with just one person. I'm getting my linkshell to chat it up with the tech people so they won't have to worry about the phone costs even though they volunteered.

I don't know about Korea...but

Japan and America if you have fiber wiring you can no longer use DSL or cable unless they support fiops wiring.

I have LG and I am having the same problem. The tech came out and opened the ports and its still not working. I have no idea what to do. I am calling them out again to make sure the ports are open as well as calling POL.

I just got off the webchat now after waiting from when it opened until now. SE thinks it might be a server issue that connects our server to their server, which could be in CA or JP, we aren't sure yet. However, we do know that while connecting to the game server, it needs to go through a backbone server that could be down, and SE says that it's up to the company that owns the backbone server to get it running which could take a week, but they didn't give me any estimates.

Also: The POL website is connected to the game server (www.playonline.com) so if the ISP asks for the IP of the game, just give them that and they should able to do a ping test for you. Hope that helps.

From what I can tell the registration / update servers are basically not allowing connections from IP address from KT / LG. Demera your not alone, I've been badgering them like mad also, usually I get the "its not our problem" lines but sometimes I get someone who's helpful. I'm of the sneaking suspicion that one of their network guys changed the security on those servers without documenting it or letting others know about it. Probably thought he was doing something good as it would cut down on the number hack attempts against their servers....

As for DSL/Cable out here, when I said Fiber I mean literally the entire apartment is pre-wired with Cat-5 drops in every room with a Fiber line being the "out bound" connection. You just drop in your own router in the closet and instant home network. Getting a DSL / Cable connection shouldn't be hard because its also wired with phone / cable lines in every room.

So which ISP's work right now, I'm not going to "change" my internet, just purchase another service specifically for FFXI (I can later cancel). May sound retarded but I can't wait the month or more it might take SE to figure this out (if they ever do).

Well, if it makes any of you feel any better (though I don't see how it would), I found this forum while trying to figure out why I can't connect to Everquest 2 through Sony. I live in Haebangchon, near Itaewon, and I also have a fiber optic connection through KT. My friend who lives in Nowon-gu also has KT and can't connect. You guys are talking about days... I haven't been able to reliably connect for MONTHS, since about mid-March. Getting KT to understand the problem was a huge hurdle, and they finally sent over a technician the other day who spent 3.5 hours doing tests and making phone calls with no results.

Anyway, I'll keep checking back here and I'll definitely post if anything productive happens. Maybe it could be a clue to your problem as well.

JACKPOT!!!

Well guys I got some good news and some bad news.

First the good news, its not SE blocking KT / LG. What actually happened is KT Megapass and LG Powercomm have been slapped with a one month injunction of all business activities. Effective 1 SEP 08 (meaning have to close business 28 AUG 08) they can't do any business for 30 Days (KT) and 25 Days (LG). Turns out they were sharing their customers database with other companies to sell you ads and whatnot. They gave away a lot of their customer information to cellphone companies and various others. Now for us weigooks they prolly just chucked it as its hard to sell us crap (but not always).

Now the bad news,
Since their basically prevented from doing crap for one month, this issue will NOT get fixed anytime soon. Looks like the routers / backbone stuff was left on, but DNS and a few other services were turned off. I'm looking into seeing if I can use a 3rd party DNS service, or some other method of getting my connection working.

Thanx for the update. I was just about to cancel my account and my dad talked me into keeping it until the 28th of Sep. atleast. With this update I will keep a few more days just to be safe and then go from there if it doesnt work anymore. Thanx a lot.

So are you saying after 30 days we should be able to play FFXI? Also, where did you find this information because I've been bugging both companies and no one would help, lol.

EDIT: I just tried other DNSes and they don't work, so it can't be a DNS problem. Perhaps its another problem?

Also, why mention shady Korean practices? Can just say shady business practices, because Verizon tried to sell the phone numbers on their customer's phones as well.

Colour me not shocked. Typical shady Korean business practices. I live with that kind of thing every day at my hagwon.

Does this mean they'll turn back on those ports or DNS thingymabobs at the end of that time, or are we screwed indefinitely?

I had my Korean GF lookup news on Daum about KT. She translated it to me from the webpage. They got slapped with a 400,000,000 won fine, which honestly for these guys is nothing, but their gonna loose more money on the 30 day halt due to people changing over. As for why FFXI won't work, I'm at an impass its not DNS, I'm thinking something with their firewall / Proxy system. Internet has been DOG slow lately (since Monday).

Also on the note of Shady Korean Business, that's just how its done out here. Just look at the construction companies to get a good idea. Or how poor wiring / insulation caused the Daegu Subway to burn awhile back, killing hundreds.

Ouch, I feel ya for hogwans, they suck. Unless your extremely lucky, your stuck with a nutjob director who's constantly trying to jip you on pay and whatnot. And when its time to fly home (if you decide to leave) they try to get out of paying for your ticket.
