And you will find almost the same line in every warrenty. Check.

Not flameing, just saying it is common practice, and yes we have to live with the downtime.

I agree.

I give permission to the flame fest to start, cause I'm not done yet.

If you've a problem with the down time (I know it sucks, don't get me wrong) Please refrain from going to the BBB website(don't ask me to define the acronym for the BBB, you probably don't wanna hear it)They won't have any exact or correct info about SE since it's a Japanese company. Next, remember that by paying SE, and by playing FFXI, you accept and will abide by the contract, the EULA, if you have a problem with the way the maintanence is going, stop paying for FFXI.\

The choice is really yours.

Well, sure. You'd have to be nuts to think that anyone would provide a contract actually guaranteeing something like uptime. I think I misspelled guaranteeing. Regardless, just pointing out that it is, in fact, clearly spelled out in your contract with them that this sort of thing can happen and that they hold no liability for it.

I think a lot of people suffer from Video Game Pychosis, even when they're not playing it... it's sad.

You spelled it correctly. Here's a biscuit!

I don't know what the policy on MMORPGs is, but in most internet business, uptime is, in fact guaranteed.

Our company buys bandwidth from an ISP, and depending on the SLA (Service level agreement), we were guaranteed 99.5 or 98% uptime. If the company failed to meet that (measured over the course of a year), we didn't pay.

Also, our company had to provide similar guarantees for the websites we produced. While contracts varied, it was standard to assure a client that his site would be up 95% of the time, or service/maintenance fees weren't paid.

Brodrick of Caitsith, you are totally right in saying that we've accepted the agreement, and there's not much legally we can do about it, but it's certainly not standard practice in the broader industry.

True. You're talking about generally more expensive and much more "serious" contracts. Clearly when you hire an ISP for business purposes, you demand a particular guarantee of uptime. I'm sure this isn't free.

It's not really comparable, though. This is game. The standard, at least with online games, is to guarantee nothing. The standard in quite a lot of fields is to guarantee little or nothing. Compare to standard software packages, which take no responsibility for whatever problems may occur for the software not functioning as you expect it to. (There is, of course, plenty of software that comes with a much better warranty.)

In retrospect, saying nobody would guarantee uptime is patently false. That was pretty dumb of me. ; ; Nobody like Square would guarantee something like uptime. And not just because omg square is evil and hates us. Because guaranteeing uptime for an online game is a very bad business decision.

Actually, it is quite standard in the MMOG market. Welcome.

I've been a consumer of this market since March 1999-- the launch of EverQuest. I missed out on UO, I wish I knew about it. :(

Downtime will never cease to annoy me, but I recognize it's necessity. Honestly, I don't care that we've had so much downtime this month, simply because of what it has been for.

The first was the bi-monthly update we've always been getting. This should not surprise anyone. Sometimes things go wrong with patches in live that could not previously be detected. History has proven this time and again in this industry.

The second two 10 hour maintenances, both of which have been extended, were for hardware. I don't know about you, but I'd rather them fix and upgrade their hardware now to give me a better playing experience now, rather than wait until next month when it's more convenient for you.
