I played FFXI awhile back, in the length of two months I was able to become a 43DRK/WAR. I was having a fine time till I got to the higher levels where my 56K modem decided it was not going to even bother. So with little left I cancelled my account and eventually it fadded away. So I get broadband a few years latter, faster then I dreamed, but I seem to be facing a problem that was not present the first time. My computer freezes up entirely now; and I can never get out without turning the power off. I dont crash to my desktop, simply lockup. I think it may be my Video Card, its a 64MB GeForce 5200 on my Inspiron 5150, but I just dont know. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to possibly fix this problem?

Hm... That video card, did you use it when you had 56k or is it new? Do you think you could also give us the power of your power supply? How many watts it is, I mean.

I ask because I've had problems with GeForce cards and power supplies in the past. Rather, GeForce cards seem to always crash computers when the power supply isn't strong enough to support it.

If it's anywhere under 250 watts, you'll probably need to replace it for a better one. The prices vary, so you'll have to shop around. I'd say a 300-400 watt supply can support MOST video cards out there.

There's many issues that could be the problem here...But here're pretty much the only issues I can think of.I'm not very experienced with laptops

Do you have the right drivers for your video card?You mentioned a reformat...Try to update your drivers. That might be the cause...Or, do you have a virus of some sort?My computer worked fine until I got hooked into my college's network, and now I pretty much HAVE to have virusscan turned on 24/7 or get mauled by SDBot...You may also have adware/spyware, try scanning for that with AdAware at www.lavasoftusa.com

Or google it if the site's wrong <.<;;

If it's not those, it more than likely IS a hardware problem, which will be hard to fix on a laptop, because laptops tend to have a different structure than desktops.Best you could do is try to get your local computer shop guy to take a look. The power supply COULD be at fault as JediKitsune said...

Please clarify, though.Is this laptop the same computer you played FFXI on before, or a different one?

I have the latest driver, disabled all Anti-Virus/Spyware/Firewalls currently running. Yes, it was the same Laptop I used in the past. One variable however is that if it froze and I reboot and go back on imediately, it tends to freeze faster then just letting it cool down. I have 512MB of Ram, and a P4 at 3.06GHZ, and a NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200. And I use McAfee as my guard against software trouble. How would I go about raising the power of my Power Source, and I would love to try anyother methods you could give me. I would like to be safe before the Halloween Event, dont want to miss that again >_<
