This has been on most major gaming / xbox sites(teamxbox, IGN and the likes). As a European, I'm kinda concerned to be left out as well. No word of a US or EU beta yet.

You think SE's going to make a graphical update for FFXI and give NA/EU players access to it?

Foolishness. :P

I'm still waiting to hear if they even plan to overhaul the incredibly crappy PS2 emulation version us PC users are playing. There's no excuse for the video lag I get in this thing.

I can get 40 FPS in and outside of the Auction House in Ironforge in World of Warcraft (and on the most populated server, too.) There's no good reason for me to not be able to get 30fps in the field in FFXI at all times.

I remember seeing the FFXI demo for the 360 at the TGS earlier this fall. Part of me though "wow, look, frames per second," while another part of me could only hear Square going "Hey, look, someone finally made a machine powerful enough to make up for our crappy graphics engine!"

Im surprised for the number of fewer polygons how good lot of ffxi looks though. The main probelm that makes ffxi is shader technology and since emotion engine (ps2 hardware software interface) is a peice of crap alot of pc gpu cards cannot emulate or use thier own shaders properly.
FFXI however has a **** load of mapping probably alot more than Wow, and unlike wow ffxi seems to bypass your graphics card and uses the main processor more to deal its video display. Wow uses simple shading to color in most areas allowing for more work to be done on the graphics processor and freeing up alot of memory simlar to how a flash movie is smaller than a .mov file because alot of it is simpler data. Now not using the video card is part of a porting problem.

The game was originally designed for ps2 and ps2's graphics cards doesnt variate between ps2 unlike the pc to pc thus they dont have to deal with all the little itsy bitsy problems of ati vs nvidia vs somone 3rd rate video card that costs $20 and since its cross platform they have to remained dedicated to the specifications and limitations of the very crappy emotion engine, last time i saw a ps2 emulator for the most decked out pc i ever seen only got 5fps obviously theres something in the ps2 thats making it very hard to be compatiable with the pc im surprise SE was able to proform the crossplatform fine, still using majority of the original code instead of rewriting it entirely.

What I am also surpised the for the amount of polygons ffxi models have I am surprised how good they look, I mod things all the time in 3ds max and SE has done an exceptional job on the models especially all the bit mapping.

360 is also another dedicated system recoding for it would be a one time ordeal for SE and from the looks of it they used most of the pc coding to begin with reason why i know this because not to long ago someone ran off with the coding for the longer draw distance and made it a plugin. This no longer works because the put the plugin in the game now though the draw distance isnt terribly that much longer its noticble since the update. The beta's only purpose would only test Play Online's (the company that provides service for SE because they support ever quest II here in japan and that **** goes down all the time when there maintenance) networking abilities with live on many scales. The best example I have of this interworkings is Could be in the middle of my halo 2 match and I get a message from my hnmls to get on ffxi to help them out. This sort of beta could only be a few months long and can probably use preexisiting accounts if not at least a new server they are going to have in order to deal with new loads.

I wouldn't think too much about the lack of a press release about the XBox 360 beta in the US. There area a few things that Square-Enix has said about the XBox 360 Beta:

1. Beta testing will start simultaenously with the release of the XBox 360 on a much larger scale than has been seen on earlier betas. The XBox 360 will be released in the US on November 22 (the target date indicated on the press release is December 10th).

2. The XBox 360 version will be released in the US before it is released in Japan.

No US beta would not suprise me at all. The beta is not a service for players, its part of the SE development cycle for ffxi on the xbox. Xbox developers are japanese. As such, they speak japanese. Now ask yourself if american players take part in the beta, what happens when they make bug reports,in english. Thats right,SE has to pay someone alot of money to translate it. Translators dont come cheap. Thats why you see warning lables on japanese equipment thats says "Warn. No parts that service user inside. Dont not open the case!" (I actually saw this on a piece of equipment from a chip fab) I can imagine that some engineer put on his resume that he took english in college. When it came time to write the warning lables, someone thought, lets save some money and give it to Yoshi, his resume says he speaks english) This seems to be what happens with video games as well. Would they really do this if translators were cheap. Not only does SE have to pay someone to translate,it just wont be as good as just reading teh origonal bug report,in its native japanese. SE probobally does realize how much american players want to take part in the beta. They have been doing a lot of listening to the requests of american (and european) players and given us some of the things we have asked for. SE may decide that the goodwill from allowing american players to take part may be worth the money that it costs. If they do,they are doing you a favor. If not,its just simple buisness.
