In FFXI, they don't name celebrations after their real names. I have seen this done in other games too.

Is this so that people from other religions don't feel left out at certain celebrations?

What do you think the reason is?

Because this is an international game, and few holidays are international.

My my, isn't this a typically short-sighted american point of view. Their 'Real' names??? First off, just because we call a holiday by a particular name, doesn't make it the real name. In fact, many of the holidays celebrated here in America were started by other cultures, or are a medly of many cultures. Which by all rights named them first. We simply slapped our own title on it. Halloween for example is known as 'All Hallows Eve' or in many places 'Fall Festival','Harvest Festival' etc. etc.

Because they wanna be original. I know i am subject to this, "Hey i gotta go to the christmas festival tonight" People will think its a big event ((In rl right now)) Easier to say a fake name and people will be like "Oh hes talking about that damn game again)) Thats what i think the reason is

This is probably why we don't have a Cinco de Mayo festival every year.

I'm not American. It even says where I'm posting from.

Chocomoon, don't pay attention to that comment. Some people tend to have Christmas pine cones shoved up their asses on these forums.

However, as some mentioned not all holidays are international. To avoid any conflict in naming an event that may or may not offend people or even apply to a certain culture, they try to keep it generic enough that everyone can participate.

It isn't even that some holidays aren't international. Some of us americans don't celebrate Christmas. My main winter holiday is Solstice. It's nice to not have to put up with another religion's holidays. Harvest festivals have long been part of most culture's annual celebrations so it makes sense to use it as the name of a generic holiday.

Actually, it's probably less about "other religions feeling left out" (we don't) and more about not having certain of the more recto-cranial inverted members of certain religions file lawsuits and start websites railing against Final Fantasy/SquareEnix like they did with the "Tinky Winky is Gay Because He's Purple" campaign.

By "real names", I'm assuming you mean the names the Anglican Church of England gives those holidays. Tell me, did a huge chunk of the ACE hold massive protests and the occasional bookburning when the Harry Potter books started coming out? Some Christians over here did.

See, if SE uses the "Christian" names of holidays (Hallowe'en, Easter, Christmas), there are a significant number of American Christians who will sling all kinds of **** because magic is used as in Final Fantasy and "magic is satanic". All of a sudden you've got people boycotting Sony and calling computers "devil tools" and beating their kids for going on the internet and suing grammar schools for using electricity... all because SE made the mistake of getting their attention by saying "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival". It's easier just to avoid some American Christians. Not all, but some.
