In the world of Vana'diel, they have electrical lights, and in one of the CoP cutscenes they are using a computer.

I didn't understand this, if Vana'diel is this far in technology why haven't they invented other things? It's like medieval times with a few things warped from the future.

Has anyone else wondered about this?

because, it's a different reality, it doesn't have to make sense to us.

And *SPOILERS* the Computers in CoP are remneants of teh Zilart, a highly advanced civilization. They made all sorts of things that are very astounding, and probably beyond the current technological levels of common Vana'diel.

Civilization was moved back a few thousand years when the Ancients fucked everything up.

What they did with most final fantasy is that they mixed Medieval Times with Present and Possibly future time. With an exception of FF7 though. Motorcycles in advent children.

Here's one-- Why is there no auto-translate function for the word--VANA'DIEL? HMMMMMM????? Always picks at my brain that one.

Mainly I think it's because the Zilart don't want the other races to have them, so they keep all the really good stuff in places where only they can get and only keep what they think as the bare minimum (or things they can make a good profit with, such as airships) in other places. Everything else that's slightly on the advanced side (fountains, guns, ect) are probably relatively new inventions made by bastok.

Honestly, it's a game!

Please don't try to overthink stuff. it'll lead to pot smoking.

i think this is meant to be a "fun" thread. no need to get worked up ^^

I'm not getting worked up. I was just offering some friendly advice. I knew a guy who used to overthink stuff like that in high school. After high school he started smoking pot and followed Phish on tour. He killed himself after the band broke up.

I don't want to see this tragedy befall another.

wasn't directing that at you really, Ricky, just in general ^^

and btw. a lot of us here are in a "tragic state". spending way to much time in this silly Vana'diel world =P

it is definately wierd that "vana'diel" is not in autotranslate. did you ever notice "widescan" isn't either? what's up wid dat?

Theres several reasons for it and this repeats some stuff already said and DOES contain spoilers to certain quests/missions in places.

This is by no means complete either as I have not done every mission and every quest in the game.

Airships are the last "great invention" of Vana'diel, invented by Cid of Bastok towards the end of the war and commissioned to Jeuno. These ships were then put into services as a mass transit system.

As they are still a young invention they are expensive, 500,000 for a pass (or rank 5 as a reward). Could everyone fly by airplane when the first commuter craft came into service? no, it was for the rich.

Guns were invented by Bastok some time ago (read about that somewhere and don't really know too much about it other than that they too are still a fairly new thing).

Now for the modern/futuristic (MAJOR SPOILERS - and has already been mentioned). Those are the result of the Zilart whom are an advanced race that died out thousands of years ago. Obviously we do not understand the mechanics of whats left of the Zilart but we have figured out how to use some of the things left behind.

I always found it funny that such an advanced race would die out... Perhaps the fate that awaits those in Vana'diel cannot be overcome by computer, guns or flying ships. Indeed Death is inevitable, a side effect of life....

Perhaps because Cid is the only inventor in the world?

Anything not left by the Zilart is basically designed or built (usually both) by Cid, so new stuff is rare and takes a while to reach the masses.
