I totally agree with you there, but that doesn't mean that people aren't still going to complain when stuff doesn't work.

I'm thinking that maybe part of what spawns so much "disgruntled-ness" (I guess) at things like this is that we're all really used to having stuff work on demand.
Absolutely. And i would be a great big hypocrite if i said i never complained, even when something can't be helped. =) People like complaining - it makes us feel as if we're at least doing something. But I draw the line at the point where people move from simply complaining about something frustrating to feeling entitled to something because they are frustrated.
Really it comes from years of working retail. At this point in my life (although I've since found a different profession) whenever i walk into a store i immediately see everything from the point of view of an employee and not from that of a customer. I am forgiving of a lot because i can recognize an employee who's had one hell of a day and wants nothing more than to go home and sleep. i don't demand perky happy service-with-a-smile, because those are real people behind the counter.
As for "motivated complaining", yes, it serves a good purpose, hehe. But i'm just inclined to be wary that 'motivated complaining' isn't just 'seeking out something to be upset about for the sake of getting upset about something' in disguise. =)
